Long story short, I have a brake issue and my 2014 F-150 Platinum is at the shop. Inspection shows I need a new brake booster and a new master brake cylinder.
They are quoting nearly $2,000 for labor and parts. Labor is about $700. They are saying I need OEM master cylinder and OEM brake booster. Total for those alone is $1000 but online it looks like aftermarket versions of those would be closer to $400 total on the high end.

Total auto newb here.
How important is doing OEM for those two parts?

What brand are the aftermarket parts? There's a good chance they are made by the same company, to the same specs, as the "OEM" parts that are rebranded as Ford/Motorcraft. As long as they are a reputable brand, and not chineesium there should be little difference in performance on a 2014 F150. But your mechanic will probably not provide a warranty for the work if he will even agree to putting on aftermarket parts you provide.

why would you want to cheap out on parts for your brakes?

don't buy parts off of amazon. if the price is too good to be true, it's a scam/counterfeit

Becase Motorcraft parts from Oreilly are half the price of Motorcraft parts from the parts counter at the stealership.

that's OEM for OEM then, isn't it? not the question he was asking.

if you can buy legit OEM for cheaper, do that

How is it that both parts failed at the same time?

OEM new is superior in every way to aftermarket. It always has been. RockAuto is cheaper OEM than aftermarket Oreilly in many cases.

I would only use OEM or the OEM supplier. In a lot of cases aftermarket is rebuilt OEM anyway but I like new when I can.

But, I would find out the answer to 1ags question. The only master cylinder I ever had to replace was on my 2005 F250 Diesel so I could install the factory tow controller and on my 1977 F250 when I got it because it had been sitting for 22 years. I have never had to replace both in any instance or either 'just because it failed'. What was the issue you took it in for?

This.

Unless the master cylinder leaked into the booster, it seems unlikely.
