Are we crazy?

Thinking of trading in my 2020 at4 so that my wife can get a new GX. I'd then drive her current 2016 4runner. I just can't make myself part with the 4runner. It's been flawless and I've got a feeling in my gut my truck is going to gut punch me with something sooner than later. I haven't had anything major with it yet but the horror stories of lifters, transmission, etc has me thinking…

No you are not crazy, but unlimited BJs and sammiches need to be a part of this deal to give up your truck.

If you're happy to drive the 4runner that sounds like a good move to me. Sitting on a similar situation with a 2018 F-150. It's been good to me, but for how long?

What's crazy is $85,000 for a new SUV.....

True. Low mileage used (maybe thru Carvana) might be preferable.

Think about it: If you paid an Uber $50 per day for 5 years straight it would still be cheaper than buying that SUV...

true, but the GX we are looking at is more like 75K OTD. just as much as an average trim tahoe/expedition, etc.

I'd reluctantly give up my Tundra for a 4Runner. Hauling crap in the bed would be a loss, but I have friends with trucks if needed in a pinch. Assuming the 4Runner is 4x4? Ranch gets sloppy in the winter.

  • Super reliable
  • Shorter wheel base
  • Easier to park in town
  • Off road capable
  • Tons of after-market options to beef it up as needed.

That really isn't any better.

Wait 2-years and find a used CPO with an extended warranty for <$50k. Use the $25k + tires + insurance you saved and take your wife to Hawaii a few times (congrats on the sex). Win-Win-Win

One of those times where I wish TexAgs had the upvote feature like TigerDroppings.
This is pretty much the best answer you're going to get.

If it was me, with only a 5 y/o truck, I'd trade in the 9 y/o old 4Runner for the wife and you keep your truck.

As they used to call it in the Army, a One for One exchange.
She turns in her old SUV and she gets a new SUV.

Your truck doesn't enter the equation.

If you're worried about impending problems with a 5 y/o truck, you should switch to Jeep. That way everything breaks early while it's still under warranty - LOL

You're crazy if you don't exit the Chevy now and get a better vehicle. Though, I'd probably go for a used one over a new one.

I can't imagine a much better reliability scenario than having a 4Runner and a GX. You give up a bed, but that's what rental cars are for -- unless you use it daily/weekly.
