Evening automotive board,

My 2001 F-250 nearly conked out on me yesterday morning...did not want to accelerate. "Check engine soon" light came on, got it into a parking lot.

Got it taken to my usual spot (had undergone recent ownership change), but they have no diesel mechanic. Dropped it at Helfman Ford on SW Freeway to have them look at it, but they don't have anyone capable of working it, either.

So, I bring it to y'all. Any of you know of a good diesel mechanic in the Fort Bend county/SW Houston area that is familiar with the 7.3L Powerstroke engine? Any and all help appreciated.

My 7.3 did that to me long ago. Was a camshaft position sensor.

Thanks...reading up on that a bit after I saw this and that sounds like a possibility. This happened pretty much out of nowhere.

Inexpensive part. Gravy install.

If you can operate a cell phone... you can do it yourself. That's what I'd do before calling a mechanic.

Good luck.

Now Auto Care on Hwy 6 near Sienna told me they work on 7.3 diesels. They had two on lifts in the shop last time I was there.

If you want to know 100% you will get true expertise, I would consider Power Stroke Enginuities in north Houston. Ford diesels are all they do. I had my '95 OBS towed there for a full check up and line replacements, etc.

Like no reaction from the go pedal or struggling to accelerate?

If no reaction, it's possible that the APPS is bad aka the pedal itself.

Struggling to accelerate. Repair process is in motion, and since I have zero experience with repairing anything in or near a diesel engine, I'm erring on the side of caution.

Thanks for the contributions, y'all.

Sounds like something other than that camshaft position sensor. When I've had these go out the truck will straight up die and not start again.

Having said that, I highly recommend keeping a spare CPS in your glovebox + the tools to install. If I recall, the tools are a 10mm (?) deepsocket + a 3" or 4" extension. Extension lengths I listed might not be correct. but you need to make sure you have the right one or it'll be a challenge. If you have the right socket you can swap it our in 5 minutes. Longest part is waiting for the engine to cool a little.
