Looks like he tried to let someone pass where he shouldn't. I've seen more modest vehicles do that road but you have to be willing to backup long stretches if someone is coming the opposite direction.

This was on a one way segment. That genius was going the wrong way on it.

A wise man once told me, "there are only two types of off road vehicles… 4x4s and rental cars"

The biggest and happiest surprise when I first saw this story was that the guy wasn't a fellow Texan. We generally take a lot of L's in the mountains.

Black Bear Pass is infamous - it is narrow and dangerous as hell with long dropoffs where vehicles often go rolling down the mountainside.

You're not completely wrong, but I would argue there are more frequent rollovers in any major city than on Black Bear - significantly more vs those that "go rolling down the mountainside".

We have the X Line Telluride. Totally could have conquered that.

You are comparing a whole city to one offroad trail. So yes there are probably fewer rollovers on that trail than in a whole city.

For a good idea what i was talking about, there are a number of youtube videos illustrating these wrecks. Here's one:

I know my Tacoma is more capable than a Kia Telluride and I would still hesitate to attempt Black Bear.

Not sure how Black Bear compares, but back in the early days of Google maps (before they'd figured out the "avoid unpaved roads" part) an Amarillo to Telluride trip got routed across Ophir Pass in a bone stock rwd Dodge Durango with highway gearing and tires. Had to stop a few times and pee on the rotors to cool them off.

I've done most of the trails around Telluride and Ouray and wouldn't think about doing Bear Bear. Kia Guy is also about to find out his insurance or the rental insurance will not cover damages.

Just seeing pictures of how little room there is for a Wrangler, with part of the oversized tire over the edge, there is no way I'd take my Raptor. Too wide.

Link?

I've done BB several times - there is plenty of room for a Wrangler. No reason any part of it should be hanging off a ledge unless staged for a photo.

They often use a dually pickup tow truck for recoveries and the road is maintained every year.

BB is a kickass trail that most any 4x4 can do with a capable driver. Sure, the "steps" can be a little scary for anyone but there is really only 1 bad switchback. The story isn't really that a rental Kia was on BB, but that they passed MULTIPLE Do Not Enter and ONE WAY ONLY signs.

Its these idiots that get government and rich telluride "locals" talking about shutting it down.

Maybe they were just trying to get to the Bridal Veil Trailhead but kept going? I know there is some parking right there, but its just for 2-3 cars.

The worst switchback is at 10:40. 2wd, go slow, use a spotter, watch your passenger side rocker. You'd be fine. I do have a nice dent on my F150 rocker from that switchback from like 15 years ago.

A Telluride trying Black Bear Pass. Hopefully this is just a case of lunatic GPS instead of a case of lunatic driver.

I did see that one. He's experienced driving the pass. I think I'll try for more open desert type stuff. My one worry with any trail I've taken in Colorado is how wide the trail is, I really don't want to rub trees and brush. Jeeps are better in most areas in the mountains.

I'm sure I'll get laughed at but that doesn't look that bad to me if you go slow and are not a dumbass. Would be fine doing that in my Telluride X Line. Have watched videos of folks taking it on stuff just like that and were fine.

My buddies and I took a 2WD base model, POS Hyundai SUV off road in Colorado about 15 years ago and we still talk in amazement about the crap we took that vehicle through and over on trails just like this.

I'm not saying that was smart doing it in that particular vehicle, but it performed way beyond our wildest expectations.

Not nearly as bad, but I took a dodge caravan rental up Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. 9 miles and one way had me worried about getting stuck and ending up posted here. I did bottom out a couple times on switchbacks.

Years ago I took a rental T4R w/ 120 total miles up the Haul road to the arctic circle. I got the insurance and the last thing they said was that it had to stay on maintained roads and don't go on the Haul Rd / Dalton Highway. The first time a truck flew past us & sprayed us with rocks I was worried about my decision.

Better get it quick or it will spend the winter up there. And probably wouldn't stay where it is all that long.

Every 4WD high clearance trail I've done over the years has always included at least one WTF is that guy doing this trail in that car moment. Usually it's an AWD Subaru crossover, and usually they seem to manage ok. But I've seen accords and civics banging through the woods too and I assume they just don't care if they tear their cars up.

I'm a pansy and even though I have a very capable Bronco, I've turned around on a couple of trails because I either didn't have a spotter, or the risk of wrecking a 55k car wasn't worth the rush of pushing past a tough obstacle.

I didn't want to be the first to say it, but yeah as long as you're patient BB pass isn't very difficult or narrow relative to a lot of the offroad trails/passed in CO. I still probably wouldn't take a Telluride on it.
