Not an amazing morning. There I am driving along in the right lane of I-10 at 6:15am this morning when I feel the back end of my car lift up and get all squirrelly. I'm all over the road but get control. Turns out a tanker truck hit me in the back left quarter.

We both pull over and exchange info and insurance. No cops. It's drivable and I get to work ok.

2019 GTI - 168k miles. I really love this car. I hate seeing this shredded metal.

Yea she gone. 2 doors, a quarter, bumper, wheel/tire and then blend to fender. Remove belongings and start car shopping now

I guess I feel I'd 100% call the police so the accident is documented, which would help the insurance claim I assume. In fact, I find it quite surprising you didn't call the police.

Am I way off base, are police not needed if you take a photo of their insurance information, license plate, and damage to both vehicles?

I did not. Came from behind and to the left. At first I thought I had a blowout, but then noticed I was still tolling ok when I got control back.

In my experience, you should always get a police report to deal with the inevitable issues that will come.

In my experience, you should always get a police report to deal with the inevitable issues that will come.

Absolutely. Plus, this is a commercial accident. Always always always get a police report.

My wife was rear ended earlier this year and we called the police. They called us back 8 hours later to ask if we still needed assistance. Fortunately I was able to flag down a constable and we got a report quickly but it is not realistic to expect someone to wait at the scene of the accident until the police show up to make a report.

The insurance has decided to fix my car. Repair estimate came in at $8,040. My insurance stated they would have totaled it out at $9,400.

I'm as shocked as you are.
