And melts the rear end. His record was averaging 173 mph for the 118-mile run.

The article I read said they had to slow down to avoid running dry on fuel.

That was my first thought, that they probably needed an oversized tank to run that hard for 118 miles.

When you said melted rear end, I assumed axle, not body

My first thought as well, but this provides some context:

As to why the tail end wound up so roasted and toasted, well, it turns out there is no real exhaust system per se on the car; it has Kooks headers and AWE straight pipes, but no muffler. The system is not only loud (Hughes said her ears are still ringing), but also generates quite a bit of heat. Anhalt is working on figuring out the exact cause of the melted bumper so he can remedy it in time for the next BBORR event in April 2026.

I'd be curious if there was a low pressure bubble in that area that trapped hot air?

I would say probably. The underside of the wing is low pressure to keep the butt on the ground. And depending on air flow from under the car probably takes some distance to come up. So you end up with a dead space at the back end of the car.

Anhalt says he saw an indicated 213 mph on the straights, and Hughes says as they approached the finish line, they took the final two 45-degree corners at 190 mph.

60 turns in each direction. Open pipes. Probably spitting fire at those speeds when letting off the gas for the turns. Would like to see some video.

I saw that, I meant video of them letting off the gas for a turn.

Awesome run.

We've run the Marathon to Marathon race a few times, and we definitely look just like that.
