Friend bought a 2001 Civic from me 3-years ago. It was my kid's car in HS/College. I sold it to him for ~$2,400 (KBB value) with 130,000 miles and 1yr old tires. Ran great, no problems and former owner was another friend who is an auto mechanic (so it was very well cared for).

Someone pulled out in front of his son last week and he could not avoid a collision. Smashed the divers side fender and wheel pushed in. No one was hurt, no airbags.

Insurance company totaled it and gave him $3,750!!!!!

Used car market seems insane right now. I can't help but think a huge recession or collapse of the economy as a whole is going to occur soon. No one can keep up with the ridiculous cost of things (thread on politics about ground beef going to hit $10/lb in 2026), someone else just posted they bought a 2021 Land Cruiser with 106,000 miles for $60k!

The price of homes vs salary is at an all time high in the US (I actually found the data and posted about it several months ago on f16).

Just can't see this being sustained for much longer.

I sold a 2011 Corolla w/ like 250K miles for $4,500 almost instantly on Marketplace. Got over 200 messages in 18 hours, picked the first competent sounding person and met at a gas station. Knowing Spanish would've helped tell them I'm not coming down on the price.

Def crazy and probably could've got a bit more.

Try doing it for a living! It's not easy to make money anymore. As a dealer.

The used market is soft and you gave your friend a $5k car for $2500

I agree with your thoughts on housing.

After all the "market adjustments" during COVID, dealers made enough money in two years to cover a decade of losses.

Prices for football tickets have been waaaaay up this year too. Haven't been able to take my kids to a game yet because it is hard to justify spending over a grand for non-conference games.

Hoping to find a last minute deal on (5) Samford tickets!

I traded in a Dodge Challenger T/A 392 two years ago for $3K less than I bought it new in May of 2020. I had owned it for 2.5 years, put 30k miles on it, had a wreck on Carfax and a pretty bad ding/chipped paint/scratch on the driver's door. Best car investment or at least the least amount of money I've ever lost on a car.

My 2019 Raptor on the other hand is tanking in value, but that's likely due to their reputation as unreliable, high maintenance, and expensive to repair. I've had 25K trouble free miles (knock on wood) from 55K - 80K, but others do not fair nearly as well.

I was able to have a brand new house built in 2012 when I was 28 years old. As a single person making about $56k, it wasn't cheap but it was doable. The price was just over $200k for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house at about 1250 square feet. That's not possible these days.

I was about the same age and income in 2010 and bought a 2000 sqft 3/2 for $137K. Certainly can't do that anymore!

....could that be because we're 10-0? Nahhh, impossible. We're always 8-4

Well we could if our salaries increased in proportion to the home prices. Unfortunately that's not the reality.

In 2019, I bought a 2017 GX with 10k miles for $41k.
I just looked on Cargurus for 2-year-old GX's with less than 20k miles and the average I see listed is around $57k, with Cargurus labeling them as Good or Great Deals. That's ridiculous. For those unfamiliar with the GX, there wasn't much change in them between 2017 and 2023.

I'm in the market for a vehicle to replace my wife's car and are considering new and used. We've found no deals at all in the used market. It seems that most 1 - 2 year old vehicles with less than 25k miles are only as much as 10% less expensive than brand new. The only benefit to going used is that you can take delivery immediately instead of having to wait.

I guess a good thing about this market is our trade-ins are being valued much higher than the historical average. That doesn't balance out, though.

Fiat currency, deficit spending, government mandates on car features, cafe standards, and offsetting electric car losses.

Prices of vehicles are never coming down

Agreed. It's not that our cars are worth more; the dollar is worth less.

The last two cars we've sold we sold to Carmax. Felt like we got a fair price and in our recent case i felt like we robbed them. Certainly way better than the trade-in offers we got from dealerships to the tune of a $5-8K difference between the two. And I'm not messing with private sales so it was a good option for us.

We sold my wife's XT5 with body damage from her caressing a concrete pole in a parking garage and a partially separated shark antenna from her backing through our garage door. And they didn't even knock anything off the price. And I disclosed it because it's obvious.

Im hoping when I go to sell my Cadillac they don't penalize me from the busted wheel where my wife turned the car into a curb 30 seconds after ignition.

I've ridden a 250 before, so bad ass! The two stroke is so much better than a the lawn mower engines they put on most Chinese made go carts. Good luck finding a decent example for $3K now. 80s Hondas are peak ATV imo.

I just sold my wife's 2016 expedition with 230k miles, body damage from where she backed into my jeeps bumper, and needing new tires in the not so distant future for $7500. Was shocked it went for so much so quickly.

I don't think it'll change as long as people are still financing $75K+ trucks and SUVs on 8 year terms.
