Of one of the darlings of the auto board - GX460

We have been looking for a while at the midsize 3rd row sized options. After driving a bunch of them, the gx 460 is one of the front runners.

Dont love the gas mileage , but otherwise it pretty much checks all the boxes. Would probably be looking at a 2023, maybe 2022, with under 30k miles.

Any insider things I should be aware of with them or look out for on potential opportunities?

The KDSS system can go wonky and make it lean to one side. The 'fix' is to swap a spring out. Doesn't happen to all of them, but it happens to enough of them to be a thing. Other than that and the seats being slightly uncomfortable on long trips, we're pretty happy with ours.

My only gripe, and I knew this getting in to the GX460, is fuel mileage/effective range. Coming from my 3.5L EB F150 with a 36gal tank going 650-700mi on a single tank, 300mi in the GX sucked but it's fine and I'm already used to it.

One of the best things I've done, so far, is change all the interior bulbs to LED. It's so simple but makes the car feel much more like a 2023 vs 2013

Other than this, I don't know that you can go wrong with a 22-23 model under 30k miles. Seems to be the main issues are with KDSS, valley pan, and transmission depending on maintenance history of the vehicle, but with that low mileage, you're unlikely to run in to any of those yet.

I get about 17mpg in probably 60-70% highway driving. On premium fuel, 20 gals at a time (since the gas light seems to come on at that point rather than closer to the 23gal capacity), fillups can be pretty common and slightly expensive if you're hammering mileage every day.

I love mine after 3 weeks of ownership.

I've put 80,000 trouble free miles on my 22. I love the vehicle. Sure, I would love to get better mileage, but I average around 17.5-18.5 mpg per tank. Considering I sold a 2014 Nissan Frontier with a V6 that got slightly worse mileage than my GX, I'm not complaining about the mpg.

Mobile One synthetic oil changes are fairly expensive because this beast uses more than 2 gallons for the V8. I get them done (along with a tire rotation) at my local Meineke and they run $160.00 every 5000 miles. (about every 2 months for me)

By far the most comfortable vehicle I've every owned. It drives fantastic on road and off road.

We are looking at these GX460s as well and in the same range. I really don't like the white taillight lenses, but it looks like you can get "scarlet lenses" if it has the Sport Design package. Hard to filter that in on Autotrader though.

You can also buy these taillights from Bell Lexus in Scottsdale, who occasionally has sales. I think mine were like $730 shipped. They took maybe 10min to install.

Thanks for the responses!

I like the green and red colors as well. Unfortunately, the search engines are finding 3 or 4 nationwide in those colors that match my parameters. There is a green one in Frisco from a private party, but he is pretty optimistic on price. Asking more than a Sewell or PP certified vehicle.

Next step is to take the wife to drive one and see what she thinks. She likes them on paper and has been pushing that direction. Even though it will be my DD, it is easier to get her signoff on it.

We're probably selling the LX570 soon & joining the club w/ a 2017ish GX460 w/ 60K miles a friend is selling. Just need to find time to fly across the country & drive it home.

What's a good price?

Will miss the LX, but Drumgirl thinks that 230K miles it getting close to too much.

You're going to be hard-pressed to find a Nori Green at a suitable mileage and price.

I just looked through listings for 22-23 models, and the pickings are slim. Probably most of them are still on their original owner/lease deal. The golden hour would probably be 3 years old when the owners trade them in, so if you can be patient and diligent you can swoop in.

They move off of sale lots fast.

Haha, but it's on the digital part just under MILES TO EMPTY (most of the time) so that could have negative repercussions.

My wife drives a 2015 with around 118k on it. We absolutely love the vehicle and plan to keep it for many more years. Need to do the valleypan as it's been leaking for a while and it's time to do a trans drain and water pump for maintenance. It's been to Colorado (multiple times), Florida (multiple times), Charlotte, New Orleans, Nashville, etc. It's a great little road trip vehicle and easy to drive and park for daily duty.

I highly recommend them. The third row can be tight, but I'm 6' and 200 lbs and have done an hour in the third row with another person and didn't mind it.

My wife loves her 2023 we bought in April. I'd rather drive my Jeep Wrangler. Her GX is pretty smooth and quiet, but I don't like the feel (seems like you're fighting AWD system just turning steering wheel). Technology is extremely lame. I'm sure the V8 will last forever.

What's weird is that the car is full of tech - blind spot warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise, HD radio, 360 cameras, rain sensing wipers and headlights, etc, but it's the GUI(s) that are so comically dated. They really designed and perfected the vehicle in 2009 and didn't care to mess with what worked.

GUI?

I'm pretty much feel that tech level covers what I need. Only other thing wouldnlikenis CarPlay. Current Dr doesn't have it.

I end up turning off most of the nanny stuff if I can

Graphical User Interface, but it's not just the screen but also the buttons and controls that feel dated; however it's not like the knobs actuate a vacuum-driven switch.

I'm 99% sure I'll purchase the Hamilton conversion kit to add Carplay/AA to my 2021 very soon.

22-23 models have the factory upgraded screen/dash with Carplay/Android Auto, also introduced the Black Line trim and a couple different color options

When our 2018 was totaled, we upgraded to a 2022. It only had wired Carplay, so I added this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPSGLG5Q?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_0_0
edit: No issues with audio. Phone calls are great, so is music.

and:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BRGRB4CT?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_13&th=1

Tucks away and is hidden, works pretty well. Not perfect but much easier to do [nothing] than to plug your phone in each time.

I tried a wireless CarPlay adapter and the phone audio was terrible, on all channels, so I returned it. I don't mind the wired CarPlay. I usually plug my phone in to charge, anyway.

My only gripe with the tech is the touchpad. I don't use it and would love something more functional in that space.

Love my wife's 22 GX and so does she. Smooth as hell. Replaced small/sad OEM tires with bigger BFG KO2s and it looks great. Extremely solid mom car that I also enjoy driving.

What are the board's thoughts on minor incidents showing up on Carfax reports?
JB

Unfortunately, dealers will give you zero info. You are kinda on your own to inspect the vehicle.

Sometimes, you can Google the vin and it might show damage from auction pics.

Yeah, I know it is buyer beware and that Carfax is far from comprehensive or accurate. Really search for ones that are clean only and know you still have to check it out carefully yourself.

Saw one that I accidentally inquired about before seeing the Carfax - the search should not have brought it up. Had a couple minor reported Carfax dings. Made me wonder how to quantify how that carries over to the second owner and such. Not really planning to move on with it, just curious.

Might use it to negotiate price down but not something that would deter me from buying one. Its not a Porsche or Ferrari or whatever. Wives crash into stuff sometimes, it happens.

Third row is mostly useless for anyone besides kids & dogs, FYI. Might work in a pinch for 15-30 min jaunts. Maybe longer if the second row is scooted all the way forward. There is also nearly zero cargo room with both halves of the third row up if that's important, other than maybe a duffel bag.

If you're still in DFW, would highly recommend Davenport on Plano Parkway for a pre-purchase inspection. That's where I have always taken my 4Runners and this current GX once out of warranty.

This guy has several great videos on the GX460, especially 2022-2023 since that's what his wife has:

Happy hunting! They're great vehicles.

We don't really need the third row other than that occasional type use. Mainly just want a bigger midsized. The third rod would be down 95 percent of the time.

What are the thoughts on the trim level differences between premium plus and luxury? Most premium plus I am seeing here have the stereo upgrade and the power third row. So the biggest difference you get with luxury level is the adaptive suspension. Is that worth anything?

Just want to consider all my options since I tend to keep vehicles for a while now.

You can get the grill upgrade for 2014 - 2019. These were the chrome grills.

The power rear seat is pretty handy. Didn't think we'd use it often, and tbh we don't, but it's so much nicer to hit a button vs trying to setup the rear seat from the back.
