I found a Subaru I like at Dallas Lease Returns. It looks like the mirror had some issue as there's a metal piece sticking out of it. When I pointed it out to the sales guy, he was dismissive - "Yeah, looks like maybe someone hit it. But it's a used car, it's not going to be perfect." Dude… anyway, that gives me pause about whatever else might be wrong with the car. It just so happens to have all the specs I want, otherwise I'd wait and buy from what feels like a more trustworthy source.

Is it tacky to drive it to the Subaru dealership and ask them to do an in depth inspection of the car? I'd pay, of course.

Tacky to require a pre-purchase inspection (aka PPI)? Not at all. However, would suggest a reputable or referenced independent shop for a PPI over a dealership.

Perhaps someone on this board knows of a good shop near where the car is located for a PPI? Expect to pay a couple hundred for a thorough PPI.

I have car buddies who have no concerns where a good car is located as they're very experienced in finding European shops (we're all into BMWs and Porsches) all over the country to do a PPI. Shoot, I know of 2 really good Euro shops within 1/2 mile of my house that do PPIs.

A good seller won't object. A sketchy one will most definitely object.

Got it, thanks. I am confident that the seller will be supportive, and I figured that the dealership would be incentivized to find anything wrong since it's not their sale, ha!

I live in Houston and bought a used bmw from a Dallas dealer and hired a guy based out in Dallas who does mobile pre purchase inspections; he drives to the lot with all he's equipment and does it there. Any reputable dealer would have no problem with it. Happy to pass on details if interested.

Reading this forum sometimes is like people that can't speak English well trying to differentiate between a "booty call" and a "butt dial".

I was in the same boat w/ a used Infiniti at the BMW dealership in Katy after I noticed some oil seepage, possibly just the valve cover gasket. The salesman was dismissive, but said that I could take it to my mechanic for an inspection....and then ghosted me after lining up an appointment with the shop.

Price was good but I passed.
