…usaa has lost their minds, or I'm out of touch with reality in 2026. New driver w/no accidents or traffic violations. $2400 for 6 months. I'm going to shop, but figured I'd check with the board to see if this is the new normal.

Try Mercury Insurance.

I've been using them for ~25 years.

Or get an insurance broker to do the legwork.

I would price out with Amica for a comparison. I have 2 teenage boys and that rate is crazy.

From everything I have read USAA claims customer service is second to none but you will pay.

High but go forward with low expectations. I've got a teen about to be in the same boat, so have been asking around with other parents. Try to exclude from other household vehicles if able. Look at companies like progressive that will do the tracker for 60 days to follow habits and give a break. Report back if crack the code!

get liability only and tell 'em if they wreck it then they're done driving.

We're almost in same boat
Kid is about to get their license
Do I just shop like I would my insurance?
Is it worth it to have on our policy?
Do I lookk to get his own policy?

He's going to get my f150 and we can limit him to just that car if that is the best route

That's interesting, my 16 year old son is about $1500 for 6 months. Location and type of car may be different, we're in the Dallas area and he has a 2017 accord. We're USAA as well.

We're with USAA and our 16 year old daughter is $200 per month for a 2016 Versa.

Just recently dropped USAA for State Farm for both auto and home. Auto rates were pretty similar but home was 1/2 as much as USAA.

What type of car are you putting them on? I've got two teenagers with USSA driving older trucks and it not nearly that bad

Don't do this, because you will forget and send them to the store in your car and then have no coverage.

Thanks for the replies. She's in a new Mazda CX-5. Brazos county.

I won't be putting her on her own policy bc as the poster above pointed out, she will sometimes jump in one of the other vehicles and run here or there.

Besides, I can see the breakout for premium on each, and it's the Mazda where she's the primary diver that's the problem. I'll definitely be shopping.

USAA has absolutely lost their way. I dropped them for Progressive this past summer. Three cars, two adults and one 18 year old girl. No at-fault accidents or traffic violations. $7000 per 6 month cycle. Yes, Louisiana's stupid tort environment drives up rates, but Progressive is $2400 per 6 month cycle for slightly higher coverages. Same $1000 deductible.

I guess paying Rob Gronkowski to make stupid ass commercials must be really expensive

been doing this for 15 years. Saved $1,000's. yeah, I have to switch every few years, don't care.

Insurance give me nothing but takes a lot. I've had almost no claims over the last 40+ years of driving. They've sucked far more out of me than I'll ever get back. Short of totaling my exotic, I'll never recoup what I've put in.

What kind of car?

We pay 672 for 6 mos full coverage for one teen driver on a Ford Fusion.

I have wondered why USAA even has commercials when you have to of served or have the ability to purchase passed to you from an immediate family member who has served. Its not like just anyone can have it, and if you have served there is a 99% chance that you know about USAA.

My wife and I have not had a speeding ticket or claim of any type for over 30 years and our USAA goes up every year. I really do need to shop around.

I shop around a lot
Used brokers and have called myself to all the usual companies including USAA.

Went to state farm a couple years ago, just switched to all state and saved $2k a year on the combo. In my experience the brokers don't save you anything.
It takes 5 mins to get a quote directly from almost all the companies.

I feel the same way. Huge waste of member's money.

When the new CEO took over last year, he sent out an email asking people to email him juan@usaa.com with any feedback. I sent 3 things:

Quote:

1) stop aggressive growth and advertising so heavily.

2) Improve front line support/voip system

3) Improve internal controls. All of the lawsuits and civil penalties USAA has incurred over the last decade is just unacceptable.

I actually got several calls from the chairman's office looking for more feedback and details. For #1, they said tough luck it is what it is.

I had quite a few cars insured with USAA until last year when I moved most to Hagerty. Right now I have 3 cars on my policy, and it says my annual rate is $10,000 but I'm getting discounts down to $1200. They've truly lost their minds.

Brother's two teen boys 17/19 are costing him about $5k a year with at least one accident. OP's $4800 for a teen girl sounds insane

The type of car makes a big difference. My buddy bought a very specific car for his son because the insurance rates were all over the place on different cars. I think I got a Honda civic but I can't remember.

Put her on the oldest least valuable vehicle.

She can still drive the others if she is a listed driver in the policy

And when she has an accident and they investigate and find out she was driving a different vehicle evey day they will deny the claim.

The bolded is part of your problem. You've got her in a new $40k car. That's a lot of exposure for them. Put here in a used $20k car and the rates will go way down. Save the new car for college after she's learned to drive in an old beater. Probably too late for you but that's an important decision for parents.

Not always true. I can see it if there is a specific endorsement that states only listed drivers are covered then sure… but your run of the mill auto policy isn't written that way.

Permissive use is a hotly debated topic in the insurance world.

Permissive use is one thing. I am talking about saying they are driving the 2002 camry as their daily but in reality they are driving the 2025 4runner daily.

Insurance companies can and will deny claims if you lie to them.

Progrssive has been good to us so far for the past 18 months. I think our insurance went up ~$160 per month adding her.

Granted she has an 11 year old Acura so maybe its just cheap to insure something that old.

Not sure how it would work with the teen driver but I just dropped Allstate for AgWorkers, saved me about 50% on my yearly cost. If you qualify I would check them out.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

Absolutely. I'm saying that you don't have to immediately assume that a teen driver with a separate policy will have coverage denied if she runs to the store in the parents vehicle.

Read the applications closely, don't misrepresent what's going on, and read the policy terms. If there is no exclusion, and you handled the information request in an honest way, then you very well could be OK in the event of a one off situation.

I hope you never have a claim. You are NOT in good hands with Allstate.

I cannot state this enough, drop Allstate as soon as possible. I can't post why publicly, but people can DM if they like.

If your kid is driving the 2025 runner and you are driving the 23 year old beater you have bigger issues to tackle
