Hey i am new to the board and I am sure this topic has been covered ad nauseum. 2018 F150 was totaled earlier this year. I was dreading replacing that bum transmission from the 10 speed so as far as I am concerned that lady did me a favor. My question is what are some good full size truck options to shoot for. I do need to drive a truck for my business so I am looking predominately at Ford, Chevy and Toyota. Was just hoping from some good advice on what engines and transmissions to steer clear of. Looking to spend around 25-30 on a used truck.

If there is a thread you can point me to that would be great! Thanks!

In that price range, I'd look at the previous gen Toyota Tundra 5.7 V8

Not good gas mileage, but a very solid engine.

They all have their warts. Pick the one you like at the price you can stomach and hope/pray you got a good one. There is no secret truck out there right now.

Avoid an 8-speed transmission in a GM. The 6.2V8 is AWESOME, but they might still be hit and miss with engines seizing. The 5.3 with a DFM disabler appears to be a safe option in a 10-speed. Some like the 3.0 inline diesel 6, and it has great torque and mileage, but then you're dealing with higher prices at the pump and that stupid DEF.

Ford 10-speed transmissions have notorious issues, but they've fixed issues with the EcoBoost 3.5. I also hear awesome things about the 2.7 EcoBoost if you're not doing a lot of heavy hauling. I'm still a fan of the Coyote 5.0 V8 as I prefer something naturally aspirated.

Your best bet might be a 2021 or older Tundra. They're gas hogs but otherwise bulletproof in old school Toyota fashion. I'm not a fan of their new twin turbo.

I know they get a bad rap on here but if I were buying one new, I would get a ram with the 100k mile warranty. They all have problems so get the best warranty

You left out GM's 2.7 Turbomax, which may be the most reliable half ton engine out right now.

I want to believe in that engine, but I just don't like a 4-cyl turbo in a half ton. It's perfect for the Colorado or Canyon, but I'm not convinced in a Silverado or Sierra. You'll also only get those in the lower trim levels with full size. If a driver wants more options, then 5.3 or higher is where it's at.

I've had both the 5.3 and the 2.7, and would much rather have the 2.7 Both have cylinder deactivation but the 2.7 achieves it without lifter failure (it's cam based). Even if you disable the AFM you may still get lifter failure in the 5.3 The 2.7 gets 310hp and 430 for torque. The 5.3 gets 355hp and 383 for torque. 2.7 has been out for almost 7 years now and largely trouble free. It's a proven engine at this time. And if this guy's budget is 25 to 30 he's going to be in the ballpark of a 2.7 trim.

+1 for a 2.7 especially if you can step up for a new lower trim model.

Titan will also be mechanicaly solid but less features and worse fuel economy
