Saw a post similar to this the other day but can't find in search function.

We have son who is about to get license. Live in Humble so Harris county impact. We have '21 lexus es350 and '22 F150 xlt. He will be driving the F150

Right now we are with GEICO and here are the dec page items
Liability is 100/300/100
uninsured is 50/100/50
comprehensive deductible is $500
collision ded is $1,000
we do have rental car for $35/day
med payments $5,000

right now with wife and I it's $1500 per 6 months. I think that's pretty good since I have one minor at fault that's about 2 months from dropping off.

Got them to quote adding my son to the policy. He alone was going to ADD $2,250 for 6 months. For whatever reason in my mind I had expected $1800 for 6 months based on what I've heard from other parents.

NOW we also shopped with Progressive. Not only did they come in much lower for my wife and I....$1100 for 6 months. Adding my son was only $600 for 6 months!!! AAAND we had them quote adding a 3rd vehicle ('24 model SUV) and it only added $800 for 6 months. So I could get all 3 cars with 3 drivers for MUCH LESS than what Geico quoted.

That info might help others but here are my questions:

1) is there a better way to add teen driver to policy? I asked about limiting him to just the truck and they said to do that he had to be on his own policy which would be more expensive

2) is the Progressive quote too good to be true? We talked with a rep and she gave us pricing so we know its not some BS online quote

3) would you guys elect different coverages?
Progressive rep made a good point...with 3 cars now we should drop the rental car coverage. If one is out of commission we still have 2 to use and kid can ride bus or bum rides with buddies

I'm an agent, and all I can tell you is with teen drivers, they're gonna get their pound of flesh one way or the other.

That said, the progressive quote I'm sure is legit. Many times in personal lines it's a constant battle of carriers buying their way into you. They drop their pants this year, cross fingers and hope for the best, then raise rates every renewal to get to where they want you actually at. For some, playing the game and bouncing from carrier to carrier every year and going through the quoting process is a fun game for the, and they don't mind switching every time someone else is willing to drop the bottom out. But for most, it's just too much hassle and they end up sticking with them until the rate increases get too much.

it's like my storage unit I keep my Christmas crap in. Started out about $60/mth when it first opened. Steal of a deal for the size I have climate controlled. But then it seems every 6 months I get another notice of a $5/ month increase. So far it hasn't gone up enough that im squirming, but it eventually will. And they will keep doing it until the attrition of members gets enough to stop raising the rate.

Idk if this is helpful to you, but I'm in Harris Co and I've had a teen/young male driver the past few years. He just turned 21.

My annual policy has hovered between $3600-$3800 since I added him on. Coverage limits similar to yours, but no rental add on. I did up the deductible on his car to $2000, but it really didn't save me much.

He drives a 8+ year old Infiniti wagon and I drive a 10 year old Boxster. We are each assigned as the primary on our respective cars, but I just got an email from SF saying they are making some changes to their auto policies, and I think this might be going away. Email was kind of confusing, and changes don't take effect until my policy renews in April, so I'm not exactly sure what it means for my bill.

My portion of that premium is usually about $1500. No penalties for accidents or tickets for either of us at this time. Last accident (my fault) was 2017.

I'm with State Farm (they have my home policy, too). I've shopped it a few times and no one has been able to beat my combined rates.

If you haven't done so already, you should consider an umbrella policy. I have one - it's to cover anything that exceeds the auto policy. It was originally through SF, but their premium got so high, I did move the umbrella to Progressive. This did affect my auto rate at SF, but I'm still overall saving money compared to keeping the umbrella with SF.
