My sister's 2015 Ford F150 stalled out on the freeway last week and had to be towed. When she called and described the situation, I suspected that the transmission was the issue. She had it towed to Ross & Greenville Automotive in Dallas as she has had some work done there in the past and had a good experience.

They called her on Monday and said it would be $8k to rebuild the transmission and that buying new wasn't an option (reason unknown). I told her that was ridiculous and to start calling around in Dallas based on Google reviews.

She got a hold of Eagle Transmission & Automotive and they went and picked up the truck for free. Feedback from them is that it's a bad torque converter but the transmission will need to be rebuilt as well. The valves and clutches are worn because the TC has been trying to go out for some time now. Quoted $4954 for the entire job with a 1 year warranty. Done by Friday of this week.

Does this sound fair and reasonable? It does to me but my experience with transmission rebuilds is zilch.

Thanks.

4954 for a rebuilt 6R80 is just a teensy bit high but within range.

What's the service history of the transmission? Regular fluid changes can extend the life of these things.

Well that sucks. It may be a little high price to rebuild but if they know what they are doing then it's worth it. Nothing is cheap anymore.

I have that same transmission in my 2014 F150. I'm at 250k miles on the same transmission. However, I have changed the fluid in it multiple times. Number one reason for the failure of transmissions is bad fluid. I learned this the hard way years ago after having to get a transmission rebuilt in a 2003 f150 I had.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not exactly sure regarding the service history. Knowing her, the fluid had never been changed or serviced which explains a lof of this.

I seem to recall there being some debate (or discussion) on the board about drain and refill versus flush when doing trans fluid. What's the verdict there? Probably just going to go ahead and do mine soon (6L80 in a 2018 Sierra).

A spill and fill is better than not servicing it at all.

With most transmissions, it's not really a matter of fluid quality or condition, it's more along the lines of replenishing the additive pack that's in the fluid. Obviously, when you drain it, having a look is also so helpful.

Many front wheel drive applications do not have a service filter, and all you can do is drain and refill.

I am for more frequent drain and fills, and change the filter and maybe 125 or 150,000.
