Rust on an Older Vehicle

TIA for any help here.

I'm in the process of shopping for my daughter's first car. We are looking at older used cars for her and have found a 2010 Toyota that we like. I crawled underneath and to my untrained eye, didn't see much rust on the frame, but there are a few small spots where the roof touches the windshield. Is there anything I can do to understand how big of deal this could be or should I just avoid all together. I'm in Houston and happy to pay a mechanic to check it out.

Do you have any pics of the rust in question? Rust remediation and paint work is expensive. Poke at the rust area and see if it still feels firm or soft/flaky. A repaint of the roof will be $1-2k before repairing any rust holes.

The biggest issue with rust around the windshield is eventually it gets into the sealing surface and causes leaks. A lot of glass companies will refuse to replace a windshield on a car with a rusty mounting flange.

There's lots of clean cars available. I'd trust your gut.

Where did the car come from? A 2010 with rust might one to avoid. Clean title? Who is selling?

If there is rust you can see, I would then worry about the rust you can't.

I'm sure there are others who say I'm overreacting, but if I can see any rust, I move on.

I recently bought a little crosstrek for my daughter. I had to pass on a nice looking Forester because it had rust and was from the NE. I hope you get what you're looking for!

PS the Forester I passed on was at a Subaru dealership so don't think they are a safe bet. They will still try to push out cars with rust if they can. Usually, they'll end up at auction.

It could be a big deal, or it might not. We fix lots of rust in those areas. On a newer car like this, typically someone has replaced a windshield and scratched the paint. They don't fix the scratch and the rust starts. I've replaced more than a few roofs, two on Toyota's, because of this. The rust gets bad enough to make holes and then you get water dripping inside. It's what you can't see that I would worry about. If there are holes, it isn't a cheap fix....

Here are the pics. It needs a new windshield for sure. Car has been between Sugarland and CS its whole life.

198,000 miles on the odo

I'd keep looking. You'll find something out there.

If it was 198,000 one owner miles that you put on there, that would be a different story.

This is a hard pass for me. That car looks used and abused. That rust looks like neglect and I don't particularly care what it looks like underneath. I have looked at a lot of crap from used car salesmen from here, other sites, and FB marketplace and have determined that.

1.) You CAN polish a turd and make it hold a shine long enough to sell.

2.) The harder someone sells me the vehicle, the worse shape it actually is.

3.) If a person cares for a vehicle like that on the outside, then it tells you everything you need to know about how it was cared for on the inside.

4.) In Doug we trust. If he says no....he just saved you a lot of hassle.

There is a reason FJ cruisers are always so cheap. Landcruiser and FJ cruisers are VERY different things.

Doug replaced the roof on my Tundra although it was rust from a rock that hit just above the windshield.
