got an old mule that has fallen on hard times and there is coolant getting getting into the engine oil. Is this something fixable (under $1500) or should I just put that money towards a new one? I have called/emailed several dealerships/repair shops and none have been able to even give me a best case / worst case scenario.

Usually that's a head gasket symptom in any water cooled engine.

I don't think you can have that repair done for less than $1500 unless it's a shade-tree guy or you DIY.

Kinda wierd a shop won't give you a head gasket replacement quote. Call them and tell them to assume that's what it is…how much to fix that? My local auto shop does that all the time for me and they know damn well I'm going to throw them some work but probably just do it myself anyway. If I don't have time to figure something out I'll pay them for diagnosis. You might have to do that first….which kinda sucks.

How old is the mule? If you decide you are going to buy new, are you going to trade that in or would you be interested in selling as is?

While my 'do-it-by-the-book' German grandfather would disown me for even suggesting this ...

If you've got 'nothing' to lose, try one of the liquid glass (sodium silicate) head gasket sealing products. If you're lucky, those can 'fix' the problem for anywhere from 2 months to 2 years, before needing re-application.

I had an old car that wasn't worth fixing 'right', and got about 6 months out of it. It's a popular product with the note lot used car guys.

Good luck.

its a 2000 and if i dont trade it in/fix it I would be open to selling it. I wont have any time to mess with it until after April but will price out some new ones, call some shops etc in the mean time.

appreciate the feed back from everyone,

Maybe do a compression test first, apparently a failed water pump impeller can let coolant into the oil
