Constant Muscle Twitching

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Went to the doctor yesterday and got a blood test. Everything came out completely normal. But when I checked in I had high blood pressure, like REALLY high, which I've never had an issue with.

But for the last 7-10 days I've been having constant muscle twitching or muscle spasms and what sometimes felt like muscle cramps, mostly in my legs but really all over my body. I feel completely fine, didn't injure anything when working out, and have full use of my coordination and motor skills. Anyone had anything similar to this at all?

Doctor thinks it's stress/anxiety/high blood pressure related but I just don't know at this point.

Change in caffeine use?

How high was the BP? Any of your workouts on the intense side/heavy? High caffeine intake? High stress levels?

Wouldn't think BP would affect it directly, but any of the other things I mentioned could.

I've had the leg twitching of late. 3-5 day a week runner here, and I googled it the other day and found nothing that aligned with my experiences. Calves and quads are always jumping around. Like a lightning storm within the legs.

Mine is mostly in my calves but they're really all over. Sometimes even in my forehead and back. Last couple of days haven't been as constant but I'll still get flutters. Wish I knew what was going on.

Stopped drinking coffee. Used to drink two cups every morning and maybe drink one cup a week now. I started that about two weeks ago.

160/110 when I checked in. 135/100 right before I checked out. But since doing it at home the last couple of days it's about 130/90 on average. Hardly any caffeine intake (average maybe a cup of coffee or two a week). Very high stress levels as I own my own company and am constantly stressed about my work situation.

Exact same thing happens to me when I get off caffeine. Twitching leg muscles, arm muscles, eye lids, etc.

Its a common effect of Caffeine withdrawal. As is increased anxiety, which may be contributing to your BP issue. Would imagine both would be overcome in a few weeks.

Thank you! Hope this really is the issue. Would make a lot of sense.

Magnesium. You are probably deficienct. Take magnesium glycinate and citrate with zinc and vitamin d.

Stress can cause twitching and higher blood pressure.

Highly recommend more exercise to help with both.

This is not that bad. It's at the upper level of pre-hypertension. You don't want it to go higher. Blood pressure meds should lower it down to the normal range around 120/80.

If I don't exercise regularly, my blood pressure gets into the pre-hypertension and sometimes higher if my diet is bad. Most of my friends my age already rely on blood pressure meds as they don't want to excercise or watch their diet.

Blood test showed no deficiencies and was completely normal.

I don't think that means much in my experience. My blood test showed the same thing and I had the same experience. Magnesium helped tremendously.

Okay, great! Thanks for the advice. I just ordered some magnesium + zinc + vitamin D

TL;DR - I highly recommend supplementing with Magnesium as the poster above has recommended.

Accurate Magnesium levels are hard to test for through blood work only about 1% of your Magnesium is stored in your blood. It's in your bones, cells, and tissues.

Your symptoms such as constant muscle spasms/twitching were the same ones I had a couple of years ago. At that time I was also under a ton of stress which wreaks havoc on your body.

I didn't give it too much thought since it was only annoying. One night I woke up with my heart racing for the first time ever and I was having a panic attack. The next day at my desk I had another one. I went out and bought a blood pressure monitor and my blood pressure was 160/110. I made an appointment to see a cardiologist. But before I could get into see him I had a couple more of those episodes and finally had an Afib attack where I ended up in the ER.

I wasn't even 40 at that time and am not overweight. I went through all of the tests at the cardiologist and passed them all (except for being put on a statin due to my terrible LDL and triglyceride levels). I even got a catscan done through a Neurologist and he said everything looked good because by this time I had also developed vertigo so I had no idea what was going on with my body. All the tests came back showing no issues but my life was a wreck. Some days the room would spin and I couldn't get out of bed for hours. For a good 2-3 weeks the only time I got out of bed was to work at my desk at the house because I was afraid of having a panic attack or a vertigo attack. Having two little kids made it even harder.

Once a quarter I see a chiropractor who also does holistic type of medicine stuff and I told him what had been going on. He did some of his testing procedures and said I was deficient in Magnesium. I started taking Magnesium that day and have never had a vertigo attack or Afib episode since. I also didn't have a panic attack but that was also due to stress which got better over time with me learning how to let go of things (which I still struggle with). When I start getting muscle cramps, muscle spasms, or twitches I up my Magnesium dosage until it goes away.

I wanted to share this because your situation sounded very similar to mine so I hope that you do try out Magnesium and that it works wonders for you as well. I recommend Magnesium to all of my family and friends because the "statistics" show that over 80% of Americans are deficient in Magnesium.

Thank you so much for this! I also was having dizzy spells and trouble grabbing things and assumed the worst which is why I went into the doctor in the first place. She assured me I didn't have what I thought I had (ALS or MS). The magnesium I ordered comes in tomorrow and the fact you posted this was an answered prayer to be honest.

The stress that I was sick was just making my anxiety worse and it was just a viscous cycle. I hope the magnesium fixes me issues!

Can confirm stress and/or caffeine affects the twitching. My eyes, shoulder and quads will dance sometimes if I am overloaded on stress or coming off a lot of caffeine intake.

Start doing Jiu Jitsu. Stick with it.

You'll stop having anxiety and stress.....you'll still have muscle twitches, but it won't be from anxiety and stress....

These are muscle fasciculations. Common in tired muscles, entirely benign in this context.

Been taking magnesium for about a week. Twitching has gotten a little bit better but it's still there.

How much are you taking each day?

It can take a month or two for the magnesium to get saturated in your body if you were running on fumes for awhile.

It took about two months for me. The recommended dose for adult males is around 450mg and I was taking between 600-800mg per day for about two months before I need to reduce to around 500mg/day. You'll know if you are taking too much if the next day you have liquid bowel movements. I'd recommend increasing by 100mg per day for a couple of days. If you are good then up it another 100mg.

When I started taking magnesium I never had another afib or vertigo attack but it did take about 2 months before all of the muscle twitching/cramps went away. I would also have a couple of minor panic attacks but I think that was more mental but the magnesium seemed to help with that as well.

From reading this thread I upped my dosages to around 500mg the other day. I thought I had been taking about 400mg/day (mine is in a powder form) but I was only taking about 250mg and I had started having a bunch of cramps in my feet and calves. Since upping the dosage to around 500mg/day I've hardly had anymore.

I've been taking about 400mg per day, which is just one scoop. I'll up it to a scoop and a half which would be about 600mg and see how that works out. The dizziness stopped for the most part although I'll have some minor dizziness (see stars) if I bend down to pick something up and stand up to quick but it has definitely helped on that end.

The cramps are gone, haven't had those since I started taking the M. Just the twitches but definitely have improved. I'm taking 1stPhorm brand which seemed to have excellent reviews. I noticed when I force myself to drink a lot of water that I have a really good day with almost no twitches and no dizziness at all. Getting old SUCKS!

Spasms have almost completely stopped for the most part. I'll still get a little flutter here and there but they are few and far in between. Dizziness has subsided as well.

I'm feeling so much better. Thanks to y'all who recommended Magnesium, seems like that was the case.

Vitamin deficiency as mentioned above? Try magnesium glysinate. Most people are severely deficient and it's hard to test for. There's also magnesium body spray or oil, bc you can only digest/absorb so much. Your skin can absorb as well.
