I'm about one week into this and feel like I'm on an episode of Alone. Low energy and a constant slight headache.

Does this **** get any better? 5 ft 10, was @ 194 lbs trying to get down around 170.

Yes it gets better. Your body has to adapt. That's exactly how it works.

Any way to help with energy levels or will it come back? I've lost about 7 lbs in 10 days, so at 187 now.

Drink more water. You've lost water weight in that 10 days.

I think you just have to stick it out. You should start to adapt pretty soon now. I think two weeks is pretty common.

Thanks. Been drinking lots of water so far.

Keep it up. Your body is adapting.

You don't have to eat "keto" every day to lose weight. You could structure it as a few days of keto, and a few days of "normal eating". It might make it more tolerable, and as long as you're in an energy deficit you'll still lose weight

And if you find that you're a few weeks into this and you still hate it, you are more likely to abandon it anyway. If you're getting to that point, might be time to re-evaluate

The quickest way to get through the keto flu is to up your fat intake. It causes your body to adapt to using fat for fuel faster. Finding the balance between fat and protein that works for you is key.

Also watch your electrolytes. As someone's else pointed out your weight loss is mostly water and you are probably low on electrolytes.

Yep, keto flu sucks. I recommend ordering some LMNT electrolytes, they really help. It gets better, stay the course

I did a very low carb diet that wasn't true keto but it was similar in results. The first 3 weeks was pretty tough, but you get used to it. You can eat a crapload of low carb veggies and protein and at least you will be full on the diet.

That actually sounds horrible to me. Usually the worst part of keto is your body adapting to burning ketones for fuel. That's usually when you get all the headaches and feel drained. But I've also never tried going back and forth before.

It's not for everyone. I did it for over a month and felt like ***** Actually went to the ER for stomach pain after 5 weeks of Keto.

To each their own. Doing keto long-term for me feels more horrible

You need to make sure to drink enough water and electrolytes, mainly salt. Like error on the side of too much salt.

If you don't consume enough water and salt you can get the "keto flu" where you feel run down for a few days until your body adjust.
bam02

Yep. You can drink chicken broth to help with it. I think it's nasty but it does the trick.

Make sure you are getting enough electrolytes, especially in the heat. There are several "Zero" options from Gatorade/Vitamin water and packets of flavor that are zero to no carb.

Also put salt on your food. Salt is good for you.

Maybe consider a magnesium pill. I take one everyday.

Hydration is important given the heat.

"Normal" eating, or the "Standard American Diet - SAD" is exactly what has caused the obesity epidemic.

"Normal" is an opinion. And if normal is obese then I want to be abnormal !

Focus on what is best for you. You are your own test case, and when it comes to your health don't let conforming to societal "norms" be a factor. Your health is worth it !

I'm happy to share the research I've collected on "abnormal" nutrition, and there are tons of qualified (see Medical Doctors, practitioners, and researchers) in the #Carnivore and #Keto communities.

so the strawman in this thread is that one either eats keto or a full on, stereotypically awful SAD diet?

There's no nuance whatsoever between the 2?

I'm sure by "normal" they just meant healthy foods, but not low enough carbs to maintain ketosis.

For the sake of argument…keto does work for weight loss. So does carnivore. So does paleo. So does Whole 30. So does vegan. So does a high carb/low fat diet. So does several other variations you've no doubt heard about.

However- you can also GAIN WEIGHT on all of those above diets as well

What they all have in common is a net negative energy balance that allows you to lose weight. Ensuring a high protein intake (no matter what type so long as it's complete protein) and +/- resistance training helps the weight coming off to be more fat than muscle. There's really no other magic bullet to this process

You find the style of eating that fits you best LONG TERM. So if keto and/or carnivore works best for you, then awesome.

What I don't like is the blanket statements by advocates of these different diets that they are "the only way"- even if it's a physician.

The ironic thing is most people claiming to do keto are just on low carb diets (I don't mean those on this thread).

yeah, I just assume they mean a more "whole foods" version of the atkins induction diet when someone says "keto" .

honestly, as someone who just controls calories and eats a high protein diet, I use a lot of products designed for "keto". I just enjoy eating fruits, starches, or grains so I have some glycogen when I work out.

I've done low carb, and I always end up feeling like a need more energy for workouts. Great way to lose water weight and for calorie restriction though.

Pretty much the approach I follow as well

I've also lost weight on low calorie diets. Counted calories in and calories out. Lots of stubborness and lots of willpower

I lost 56 pounds in 4 months.

I was angry for 4 months. Almost got divorced (not sure if thats true, but wife wasn't happy with a husband who was hangry for 4 months.

......slowly gained it all back.

Sustained a Carnivore/Keto nutrition plan for almost 4 YEARS now...

1) I eat WHENEVER I want.
2) I eat AS MUCH as I want, literally.
3) I don't count calories
4) I don't have to weigh myself, because I'm at my ideal weight. It might fluctuate up or down 5 pounds depending on season, but it is the lowest stress easiest thing I've encountered because you never have to go hungry.
5) My bloodwork/lab work is amazing, done yearly.
6) I feel better at 40 than I did at 30.
7) Had Covid twice, first time it was a sniffle (and loss of taste for 3 days). Second time I had a sore throat for three days.

**Find a nutrition plan that works for you, but few stack up on the satiety, fulfillment, metabolic health, and bloodwork measures like carnivore.

That's pretty much where I'm at. Did keto for 3 years and now mainly carnivore with the occasional fruit mixed in. The fat and protein keeps you full and like you said, eat as much as you want. Some meals I have to make myself eat. No counting calories. Mainly all meat and eggs.

No one here knows your situation. Don't know how old, what you weigh, whether you work out.

But, as a general rule. Don't do keto. But if thats what you will stick to and it doesn't affect your overall health...fine.

Just find out what your maintenance is. Eat 400 calories a day less that that. 40 percent of those calories being proteins, 40 percent carbs, 20 percent fat. Incorporate 3 days of resistance training.

You will lose body fat. You will feel better.

None of this is rocket science man.

DON'T EAT CARBS.

Ugh, Keto people are like crossfitters...

Look, it can work for some people. But for all around health, especially if you are active. EAT FREAKIN CABRS. You are going to feel better and perform better.

And why is it that anyone I have ever met on keto do not have impressive physiques?

I was the same back in May, 5'10" and 195. It took some getting used to but your body will adapt. I started out doing a 2 day juice cleanse to get started then eliminated breakfast going forward and cut my portions down by half. I'm 173 lbs now and want to be 165, its tough the first few weeks but when the pounds start coming off you'll feel more motivated.

I've done the 2 day every month since then and it seems to get things going. Going to do it again this week!

Your statement is incorrect. For all around health - AVOID CARBS. To feel better and perform better.....also AVOID CARBS.

Note: Often KETO and CARNIVORE people are lumped together in the "No Carb" group which is not inaccurate, but KETO is much more focused on FAT, whereas Carnivore is much more focused on protein (and if animal fat comes with it then so be it).

I'd love to hear your thoughts on what is an "impressive" physique.....because the way things are going in America right now for middle-aged office workers which I'd assume most of us are it is certainly rare to see even minimum standards of healthy as those standards become more and more lax err "body positive"

TxTrasplant is doing a great job in this thread (which you have posted on).

She is a far better (and far more patient) poster than I am.

And no. You are wrong. Flat out.

Impressive? I mean athlete not some tubby office worker who snagged on to some fad diet to lose a few pounds which can only be achieved by eating below maintenance calories. (Look, Im not saying that the tubby office worker losing a few pounds isn't a good thing...it is, but that is not truly the best way to go about things and absolutely not the way to go about it if you are active.)

If no carbs are the best for performance, and carbs are not only unnecessary but inherently bad for you, why do more college and professional athletes not avoid them completely?
