I have been training in Houston for the past 6 years, including running 7 marathons, running about 1500 miles/year. Before that I was an avid racquetball player.
I am the parent of three cross-country runners, including one who is now a college long sprinter (400/800/1500). We've all used Gatorade, and more recently G2 in attempts to decrease sugar content. However, Gatorade is an inadequate source of electrolytes, and at times we've supplemented with electrolyte tablets, salt tablets, etc.
Recently my son and I have developed a high sodium (with potassium and magnesium) electrolyte mix, using my skills as a chemist, and our desire to make a low calorie mix that provides the electrolytes that endurance and fast twitch athletes need, at an affordable cost.
We know there are products out there in this area, even good ones, but we have made a bulk mix that will be about $.40/serving. It is NOT meant to be a primary hydration source, but a teaspoon mixed into a pint of water can be part of recovery, or part of the strategy for endurance activities.
We've been doing taste testing, and there's no perfect way to mask 1000mg of sodium, but we've found a pretty good balance with a citrus flavor sweetened with Stevia. I don't know if this is a real business opportunity or not, but it's a way for my son to make some money during high school by helping fellow athletes who want a better and/or more affordable electrolyte supplement.
Send me an email at atm94unc98 at the google if you're interested. I'll keep your names and addresses, and let you know when he has the inventory is available. The cost will be $25 for the first bottle of 50 servings (shipping is high!), which will be in a food grade plastic bottle with a 1 serving scoop. The bottle would be re-usable, so we could do later orders in Zip-loc bags in bubble envelopes, probably about $20 for refills.
