Wife was feeling bad all weekend. Probably started Thursday or Friday feeling tired and off. Little worse Saturday with tired and achy, worse still Sunday. Never had a fever. Went and got checked today and was positive for Flu. She hadn't gotten the shot. Apparently too late for any of the flu lessening meds.

Questions for helping her (she is not a pleasant or cooperative sick person) for our Knowledgeable Medical Ags -

What are the best things to help her push through the symptoms besides Tylenol/Advil, decongestants, etc.

How long are you generally contagious?

Then for me: (I got the flu shot maybe a month ago. Know that isn't a guaranty. Felt a little off, achy and tired yesterday, but feel fine today. We were together in close proximity all weekend. Maybe it was trying to take hold, but body was able to fight it off since I had the shot??)

Should I go get tested now? Wait until I actually feel sick?

Figured I would use a guest room and give her some space aside from taking care of her.

Any other things I could do proactively?

Fluids and rest. HEB fresh squeezed orange juice from the produce section is the bomb.

Also...don't get flu shots. They suck. My opinion (based off the fact that the only time in my life I had the flu was coincidentally about a week after the only time in my life I got the shot).

I've got the flu currently as well. Started not feeling great Friday night and got worse on Saturday with temps around 101. Went to the doctor yesterday morning. They gave me TamaFlu and some prescription cough. Last night was rough and had a temp of almost 103 this morning.

I'm just taking the TamaFlu twice a day, cough and decongest regularly, and Tylenol / advil as long as I have a fever. Lots of liquids. Was told you're contagious for up to a week from when you first start having symptoms.

This is the second time in my life I've had the flu. Both times I had not gotten a flu shot that year. Most years I do.

That is probably the most unhelpful asinine response I have seen on Texags. Not interested in your personal prejudices and unscientific thoughts. About as valid as that I could say I have gotten the flu shot pretty much all my adult life and haven't had the since kindergarten.

Was hoping I didn't need to ask not to get those types of responses. Should have known better.

Hey...I lead with fluids, rest, and fresh squeezed orange juice. And I qualified the latter response as "my opinion".

Calm down. Stress doesn't help. Hope you and your wife feel better soon.

Many viruses aren't fond of zinc ions in the cells so taking a zinc supplement with something that side cellular absorption like Quercetin or even green tea might help a bit. Otherwise, rest, good nutrition, vitamin c and D to help recovery, and meds for symptoms as needed would be what I would try.

I'm either really lucky or naturally resistant as I haven't had the flu since I was a teenager, and I've had like 2 flu shots in all that time. When I get older and weaker, I'll probably start on them at some point. The do work if they pick the right virus variants to target for the season.

Yeah, you're on the right track. Tylenol, ibuprofen, sudafed, throat lozenges, mucinex, honey (pretty effective for cough), etc., along with plenty of sleep. May be some benefits to getting some sunlight, having zinc lozenges may also be of some benefit. But really, your immune system just needs to do its thing.

At this point it's too late for Tamiflu. Though Tamiflu isn't all it's cracked up to be anyways (on average reduces symptoms by about a half day, and side effects are sometimes worse than the flu itself).

If someone is getting sick I try to refer them to the Dr. Coates suggestion for covid. Is not a miracle cure or anything but most of the supplements have shown to help a little.

Quote:

Quercetin from 250mg up to 1g twice per day Remember this is a Zinc ionophore.
Vitamin D3 Take this for sure if you are deficient and I now recommend taking it as long as your values are not too high.
Sleep greater than 8 hours per night
CoQ10 100-300mg per day: a potent antioxidant that potentially helps balance oxidative stress, increase vasodilation, prevent clot formation and decrease vasoconstriction.
Zinc any amount is probably good but take what you can tolerate without making you feel bad up to 40mg. You do not want to be Zinc deficient as it is how many drugs like HCQ work.
Melatonin 0.1mg to 10mg at night. Take what you can tolerate and what helps you sleep without making you feel drugged or tired in the morning. If you are diabetic watch your sugars.
N-acetylcysteine (NAC) - 600mg twice per day shown to decrease severity of influenza, improve lung functions in COPD, antioxidant properties, potentially helps prevent clotting and with mental disorders. Caution for asthmatics as there is potential for bronchospasm.
Vitamin C 250mg to 500mg twice per day. Effects debatable in oral form but IV did help in China. But is proven to strengthen immune system
Green Tea either drink some or 1 pill per day alternate zinc ionophore if you don't have or don't take Quercetin
