Intermittent Fasting

I have one day each week that is my no gym day and it's generally pretty busy, so meals have to be quick. I'm thinking about using that day for intermittent fasting.

I know there are some benefits to it, not the least of which is a 100% deficit in calories. My BMR today is around 2200, so it would go a long way toward dropping those pounds. For those of you who do it or have done it, I'm curious how you approached it and if you found any difficulties you had to work around. How did you feel when you did it? Were you fiendishly hungry all day? Did you change anything about the days before and after? Was it a 100% water-only fast, or did you allow yourself minor things like coffee in the AM?

My BF does this. He has a lot of weight to lose and feels like it's beneficial to his journey. He does have cold brew in the am, and he drinks A LOT of water to stay hydrated. He does not specifically do it on his rest days. And I know he's told me his workouts are lower energy when he does them. But it's not impossible. Sometimes he extends the fast to a late lunch the next day (instead of breaking it as soon as he wakes up).

He also does longer fasts using the Prolon kits (I think those are 4 day fasts).

I think he likes doing it, but I'm not sure it makes a huge difference (or hasn't so far, anyway). It's just a goal for him to focus on. It's also a way to simply avoid food, which is his nemesis. I think for him there is a mental aspect to that (knowing he can go without and doesn't have to eat something just because it's there).

I do 24 hour fasts every so often. My one suggestion is to gradually build up to it as it can be a shock to the system if your body isn't used to fasting.

Start with 16:8 for a few weeks a build up to it from there.

I've been doing the 16:8 since mid-August on one meal a day, eating in the late afternoons/evenings. A combo of that, counting calories/macros, and a more active lifestyle has been very helpful for me

As long as I eat 100+ grams of protein each day, I'm generally not having many cravings and drink water throughout the day. Now if I eat added sugars, I start craving

Topic you want followed by Texags into Google works way better than the native search anyway

Thanks for bumping. As you can see, I am a big fan of IMF. That said, I am going to be testing high protein calorie deficit to try to lose my last 20 - 25 pounds. I put on about 10 over the holidays. So I may start a thread on that in the coming weeks. But I will still be skipping breakfast as I have done for years (except an occasional Sunday brunch with the family or vacations etc. )

If it works for you, it works.

Can't see how it can if you are lifting heavy or really working out hard, but some people can pull it off.

I can't take anything that the AHA says seriously. They are a joke. I'm not a fan of fasting for me but it does help people out with weight loss.

The AHA has been on the take since the 60s. I find it interesting that they're now against fasting a year after big pharma got the FDA to sign off on semaglutides.

Get the fk out of here.

I run 30 lbs. lighter when stick to a 16:8 fast. Did it for 3 years, lost 30lbs in that first year. Then had some life changes and went back to a regular eating pattern. Gained 30 lbs back. Then went back to it about 8 months ago. Dropped back down 30 lbs. I'm sticking to it from now on. It's easy for me to do. I don't care if some report is saying it has health risks. I don't believe any of it.

Probably some of those folks were under the impression they can eat whatever they want in that 8 hour period.

We're all different, but I did this for 20+ years before it even had a name. I wasn't trying to do intermittent fasting. I just didn't eat breakfast. It was neither difficult nor unenjoyable.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe it looked at people that were "trying IF" and tracking their outcomes. I think it just looked at self-reported eating windows. The full paper is not available yet. There could be a lot of things that would influence this. Smokers tend to have a suppressed appetite, so they could be in the group that eats less often. Very sick people tend to eat less often. It could be a number of things. It's hard to evaluate without seeing the paper.

Also, the author of the study isn't claiming that IF is bad.
Quote:

"Although the study identified an association between an eight-hour eating window and cardiovascular death, this does not mean that time-restricted eating caused cardiovascular death," Zhong said at the event.

Been doing it on and off for a number of years now. For me it's not really a weight loss thing, unless I'm trying to cut weight for a tournament or something, It's more of a mental thing. I don't get "hangry" like I used to.

The American MSM called the science settled for him. It's a great example of media bias and headline manipulation.

I am just going to assume anything from the AHA should be ignored. They are obviously not a serious health or science based organization.
