Those of yal who have had surgery to correct a deviated septum, can you share your experience? Were you happy with the outcome?

For as long as I can remember, I've always had full or partial blockage with my nostrils and I battle with sinus infections on a constant basis. I'm hooked on two nasal sprays and often times wake up in the mornings with a headache, usually multiple days of the week. Overall, it feels like my brain is dying and I'm looking to improve quality of life.

My ENT put me on a cpap machine which has been great, I'm getting good night sleep and feel refreshed in the mornings however she is recommending that I have surgery to fix the structural issues with my nose. I'm just looking for the trade offs and interested in hearing from others. Thanks.

I've never had one done, but I've easily done over a thousand. The upsides would be better breathing during the day and better tolerance of CPAP along with, possibly, lower CPAP pressures. A decrease in the frequency and/or severity of sinus infections really isn't something that you can reliably predict, so don't do it if that's your major concern. If your doctor puts splints in postoperatively, count on a week of misery. If your deviation is up front or way up top, you can't always get everything perfectly straight without worrying about compromising nasal support. Additionally, as the septum is the dividing plate between the two sides of the nose, you are "robbing Peter to pay Paul" when you correct a septal deviation, to a degree. All the best.

Had a naso septo rhinoplasty exactly a year ago for my deviated septum. So glad I did it. Recovery was worse than I was expecting (days 3-5 were particularly rough), but the difference it made in my quality of life still shocks me. I love being able to breathe through my nose when I sleep and have much more relaxed and natural breathing throughout the day. I have no regrets doing it other than wishing I would have done it a few years earlier. I went back to work (seeing patients in clinic) on day 7 and was glad I took a full week off.

Thanks for sharing. Great story and that's what I've heard from other testimonies, that the procedure is life changing. I'm surprised because I read that 70% of adults have deviated septum's yet I hardly hear about people who have the surgery.

Perhaps it depends on how bad the septum is deviated. I had absolutely no airflow through my left nostril.

Same here, I usually have full or partial blockage and it seems to alternate

My situation sounds similar to yours. I had the surgery done and the quality of breathing afterwards was material. I was mildly uncomfortable until they pulled the stints out, but I endured for three days only. Sleeping upright was a little bit of a pain, but all things considered, I'm glad I did it.

Yes the outcome outweighs the recovery by at least a thousand. I didn't know I had a deviated septum until my ENT told me about it; I thought I just snored when I was in a certain position.

Night and day, it felt weird being able to breathe through my nose; I could feel cold air coming through. I stopped snoring too.

If your ENT recommended it, I'd take their advice.

Thanks for sharing. Ya I'm totally on board with it, I will get the quote on the procedure next month. My wife however, I need to convince; she thinks my image will completely change.

My doctor says the procedure will primarily be functional base but as result, there will be subtle changes to the position of my nose.
