I am 6 ft, 245 pounds. Quick background, in September last year I got serious about tracking my food. My workout consistency had been solid for the better part of a year but I was not seeing much of body composition results, although I was getting in better shape.

I made the change to work hard on eating consistently in September '23. Continued working hard with pt and counted macros and executed consistently. No weight change at all. So the weekend after Thanksgiving I went and got a dexa scan so that I could try and better understand what was going on with my body since I had no weight change at all, none. Even with dropping my calories more than initially.

I then continued to be as precise as possible and as consistent as possible. I have not only not lost weight, I have gained 4 more pounds. I have been battling the frustration in my brain. Knowing that I'm working very hard, fighting the hunger eating in a deficit etc. Even further reducing calories.

Well today I had my next scan and I wish I had gotten one a year ago when I started. I am now 249 pounds. In the last 12 weeks I have lost 12 pounds of fat and gained 16 pounds of muscle. Now I am more motivated than ever.

I want to encourage anyone who may be struggling with their fitness or weight loss to keep after it! The scale is a poor metric for progress! Keep working hard! Use as many metrics to chart progress as you possibly can.

For the nerds who are interested, I started in September last year eating 235 grams protein, 255 grams carbs and 110 grams fat. I am currently eating 235 grams protein, 190 grams carbs, and 100 grams of fat. 2 days of lifting, 4 days of conditioning

Don't listen to the negativity in your head and keep getting after it! You got this!

Good for you! I'm not lifting yet because my body is still getting in its own way, But now that I'm down 20+ pounds I'm going to start working with a trainer to build a routine that works well for me. I'm really glad I bought a quality scale that does a 4-point body fat measurement. That's the more important number, imo.

I knew going into this I would like lose muscle in the process, but what I've been working to do is preserve my lean muscle mass. I lost about 6 pounds of muscle in the first month, but I started working with my macros to increase protein and I'm up one pound of lean muscle mass in the last month. If i can maintain that lean muscle mass, at my goal weight I will have about 16% body fat.

Nice work! I don't expect to maintain the recomp rate that has occurred in the last 3 months, the fat loss will out pace the muscle gain at some point.

And keep it up OP! That's great progress

I've been meaning to get a dexa scan. I dropped 50 pounds over a span of 4 months on 99g/protein day and most likely lost some muscle mass. Since Jan 1, I upped my protein intake to about 160g and added 4 days of strength training/week while maintaining a slight calorie deficit. Have dropped another 4 pounds but definitely building lean muscle mass now

It's exciting to see the progress for sure and I agree, weight is just one of the many indicators and measurements

Thanks! Nice job on 50 lbs, that's great and no easy feat no matter who you are.

I may be missing something but by 'not a critics' logic your total calories should be no more than like 800 calories TOTAL with 99 g of protein. Gotta love a good drive by.

Not to mention I'm not sure you can get much more accurate results than getting dexa scans to see what has changed.

That's awesome! Congrats on the positive results. It's definitely make the lifestyle changes easier to maintain when you know it's working. Keep it up.

How do you go about getting a DEXA scan? What does it cost? Where do you go?

Fantastic. I had a case of "syncope" and was revived at the hospital last year at 347LB. NEVER knew I was that fat. After every test in the book, I just simply quit added sugar and fast food and lost 50 LB in a couple months eating Whole Foods, with very little portion control. I've now added exercise and dropped another 20.

We all truly control our destiny and are what we eat.

I went from pre diabetic 6.x to 5.x a1c with no diabetes medicine. Just better food and supplements.

I do take high BP meds now however. But you are right. The scale is not the answer. There are many answers in between.

You should be able to google it and find a location near you. Should be less than $100
