The M.T.A. has quietly demanded roughly $750,000 a year from the organization that runs the marathon, to make up for the toll revenue that the authority loses when it closes the Verrazzano North America's longest suspension bridge to vehicular traffic, according to interviews and memos reviewed by The New York Times.

My initial thought is that this is dumb. NYC is already such an expensive marathon. And I'm willing to bet that the MTA makes up a lot of this revenue through increased subways use during that weekend.

And, while I know the fee would just be rolled into registration, it is funny to think about runners showing up to the start line with a **** ton of quarters.

I'd have a lot more sympathy for the NYRR if they were a nonprofit, but ultimately they have a lot of leverage. They are one of the few races that could probably double their entry fee and still fill up immediately.

Hmmm…might get arrested for running with a roll of quarters in my pocket…

I thought they were a nonprofit? Has that status changed recently?

They've had excess revenue of almost 60 million in the last 10 years.

and their CEO makes 700K+. That doesn't change that they are officially a non-profit organization. i say that, and i'm not an NYRR apologist by any means. I lived in NYC and worked in conjunction with them for several years. I know people who still work at NYRR. Not the biggest fan of the way they conduct things.
