Hi all,

I have a 6+ year old Garmin Forerunner 245 that I've loved. When it comes to outdoor activity, I'm running and lifting weights (metabolic conditioning) 5 times a week. Though I live in flat Texas, I love to hike off-grid whenever I can.

I've been very happy with my Garmin, though I've not kept up to speed with the latest tech. Any recommendations? Looking to spend between $200 and $400.

If you love your Garmin, I would stick with them. I have used a Garmin Fenix for 10 years but for your budget and needs I would recommend any of the one's listed below.

Instinct E - $299.99
Forerunner 165 - $249.99

Non-Garmin Options:

Coros Apex 2 - $349
Coros Pace Pro - $349
Coros Pace 3 - $229

I have the Coros Apex and think it is fantastic. Of course made in China, so price may be going up.

You might also consider the Suunto Race S - as long as you don't need to load your music on your watch itself. It looks like a heck of a value.

You might be able to get a Fenix that's 1 or 2 generations back "new old stock" in your price range. They are fantastic hardware.

Very pricey, but the Garmin Fenix has literally changed my life. Every morning, I look forward to the "morning report" on my watch - sleep score, body battery, HRV, heart rate, training readiness, etc... I bought my GF one and now we compete to see who can get the best sleep score.

I find myself doing things to try to get the best score. Also, as an older dude, I love the little flashlight on it for middle of the night bathroom trips or early morning when I don't want to wake up the GF.

And I don't think I need to mention, but the fitness aspects of course are top notch. I use Spotify and I have a workout playlist that syncs my workout playlist and another one with my watch. I can run, bike, whatever without my phone and it connects via Bluetooth to my headphones. I've used Garmin products for probably the last 20? or so years.

I also track steps and try to get 10,000 per day every day. It has challenges you can sign up for to compete with running/biking/whatever.

We have a house on a tidal river on the Ga. coast and there is an app that has the tide schedule which is stupid useful. The tide goes up and down at least ten feet, so you have to be aware of it.

I would pay double for it, and I can't imagine a better watch. I know that is way out of your price range, but the first watch I had was one of the less expensive options. I can't speak to the current models of those, but as you can tell I'm a Garmin fan.

Edit: Come to think of it, I may have my old Fenix lying around somewhere. Fenix 5? I think. I I have the 7 now and I just bought my GF the 8. I try to skip a generation when buying. Edit 2: My GF has the 4 lying around somewhere but she probably won't part with that - it was the first gift I ever bought her.

I've always been a garmin guy and over the years, their support has been historically fantastic. That said, when its time to get a new watch, I likely won't go back to Garmin. I have a 6x. Garmin rolled out a firmware update that disabled bluetooth on my watch. It will not connect to anything. In talking with support, they accidentally admitted the firmware rollout was a wrong version. I've googled the issue and its not uncommon. Garmin wants me to pay them $180 to fix the issue. Not a chance.

I am done with Garmin too. About 2 1/2 years after purchase the watch stopped taking charge. I googled the problem but could not find a solution that worked.

I bought some DeOxIt and rubbed the contacts with a QTip for my old one. Also got a new cord.

I did not buy a new cord but did clean the contacts.
