Hey everyone, as the subject line reads, I am seeking info based on experiences of some fellow Ags/Texags folks regarding prostate cancer treatment. Obviously not solely consulting an anonymous message board to make ultimate decision on this but thought it would be beneficial to hear some feedback from some who may have experience.
Long story short my father who is 64 years old (c/o '82) was diagnosed with a slow advancing prostate cancer a couple years ago. He and his doctor decided to go the route of monitoring it with no further action necessary yet.
Fast forward to this past December his numbers spiked a bit and they have determined that it's time to go ahead and get this taken care of. Most likely course of action will be RALP (removal of prostate) if the scans this week come back that it has not spread and is contained to the prostate. He is understandably very worried about the negative side affects of the surgery such as ED, incontinence, quality of life issues etc…
I have a very elementary understanding of it all but have been surfing the web and researching various options. One of the ones that was shared with me and caught my attention was DART (done at the Dattoli Cancer center in Florida), and Brachytherapy.
I would greatly appreciate and value any feedback on this. Of course we will ultimately defer to medical professionals but I've learned it never hurts to get various points of views based on people's experiences who have lived this and been advised by medical professionals themselves.
