Bursitis?

I'm 61 y/o in good physical condition. Was visiting with family, right elbow on the granite kitchen bar for 20-30 minutes. Noticed a soreness that soon turned to pain. Iced it the first week for pain relief. It's been about 3 weeks now. Finally went back to the gym yesterday and pain is still acute with certain exercises (like bottom of bench press motion). A PT friend says it's textbook bursitis and said the only cure is to rest it. Any other experiences/successes with this? It's put a dent in my fitness routine and bumming me out.

Is it swollen? Olecranon bursitis can be sometimes big and swollen. A cortisone shot can be helpful.

Slightly swollen. Does a cortisone shot last? Or a short term solution?

If you dont lean on your elbow again then it should last.

Had bursitis in my knee a couple years ago that kept me from being able to bend it without a lot of pain. Doc said ice and rest should have it go away in a few weeks, I told him I had a flight to Australia in 3 days and that wasn't an option. He pulled out the cortisone shot and stuck me. No pain the next day and none since.
