My 13yo has done 3 sprint tris with me this summer. We aren't doing anything fancy. We have good road bikes but swim in jammer shorts and are happy with our experience. I'm happy to finish each race. That said, he wants to work towards an Olympic next summer and we also plan to swim 11/9 at Canyon lake which I will assume will be beneficial to have some insulation….

So can someone educate me on the options and recommend some affordable options for both Tri Suits and Wet Suits. I don't have plans to really be more than I currently am. Keeps me active and healthy and that's my goal, but he wants to take it up a notch so want to (affordably) make that happen.

What size wetsuit? I have a size M blue seventy helix full sleeve that hasn't been used in years. Probably used it ~10 times, 1 half IM, 3 fulls, and a handful of open water training swims.

IMO you don't have to spend a ton. I got a cheap ish Xterra. Look on eBay if you don't take AggieOOs. A sleeveless for that November one may be the way to go.

Pro tip: cut off a few inches from the bottom of the leg and it makes wetsuit stripping much easier during t1

We did a local gym one. We did the Cal Tri San Antonio, which was at Texas ski Ranch in new Braunfels, and we did the Pflugerville tri . September 21 we're going to do another Cal Tri in Austin. The cal tri series is great because they're much smaller And youth friendly. That said my son held his own at the Pflugerville race. It has been an awesome and humbling experience. He does swim team so he kicked my butt at the Pflugerville. Tri swimming his 500 m in 10 minutes where I was 13 minutes. I usually can match him or beat him on the bike, but then he also beats me on the 5K.

I'm interested. Medium should work for me. I'm 5 foot 9/160 pounds. My son is 55 and 110 pounds so he probably needs something much smaller.

My BIL and I plan to but they wont let kids in under 16. Common problem we have found. A lot of the races have a 16 yo minimum and they dont advertise it well. We were even able to sign him up for some....and then closer to race time they contacted us and said he couldnt do it.

Awesome. I grew up in the area and my folks live in copper ridge. I like to go on training rides up river road starting in landa park when I am in town. If you have interest sometime I can PM next time I am coming to town.

I'm 5'10 and was between 160-175 when I was doing triathlon, so should fit you. Shoot me an email and we can probably work something out.

I'm in Austin area but down in NB for work a decent amount.

For budget wetsuits keep tabs on Xterra. They run ridiculous sales once or twice a year. In Texas I've never needed a full sleeve, always worn sleeveless.

Tri suits are probably going to be more than you want to spend. I've had good luck with 2XU, Zoot, LG.

Enjoy the sport. It's a blast.

Used on on-sale Xterra is the way to go unless someone gives you one. I preferred a wetsuit with sleeves.

For an olympic for most people I would recommend a tri suit just to give you a little padding which most people prefer. When I was racing a lot I was on my bike enough I did not care if I had padding or not for anything less than a half. Even during my IM my trisuit had minimal padding.
