Need a simple, but effective workout app

I am looking for an app I can use to track my workouts. I have tried numerous apps, but none of them seem to be equipped to do what I'm looking for.

Basically, I am looking for an app where I can plug in the exercise, # sets, # reps, and weight, and then basically check the sets or exercises off as I do them. Apps like MyFitnessPal and Anytime Fitness are very cumbersome or don't let me customize my workout - they want to tell me what to do. My solution has been to use a Google Docs spreadsheet, but that is kind of a pain to use on my phone.

There is/was and app called Strong Lifts 5x5 that was very simple and did exactly what I need an app to do, but the sticking point was you could not change the exercises on the list. If I could change the exercises on the list, it would be perfect.

I think the paid version of the 5x5 app will let you do that - I can't remember the cost but I don't think it was very much.

In classic TexAgs fashion, I'm going to answer your question with a solution you didn't ask for - pen and paper.

I buy a $5-10 workout journal and just write everything down. Obviously has its limitations, but at least for me, workout tracking is more of a session to session reminder, i.e., I did this lift at this weight for this many sets and reps in my last pull session, so I'll add five pounds or a couple of reps on this session.

It also keeps me off my phone during workouts, so I'm less tempted to open Instagram or whatever and waste time.

I used to do this. My gym gave us workout log books for free, but stopped when they launched the app. The reason I'm looking for an app is it gives me only one thing to carry that also has a timer for rest and plays my music.

I haven't been very consistent about tracking my workouts lately, but for a while I just used the notes app on my phone. I had a shorthand notation for weight and no of reps.

Not quite as easy as an app, but better than a spreadsheet.

Google sheets is your friend. I've been using it for a long time for this purpose but its not perfect. Columns are dates, rows are exercises and I group the rows by "chest, biceps, triceps, legs" etc. Then use the cells to track weights and the notes in the cell for reps. Its not perfect but gives me more flexibility than using paper.

One thing? But what about your towel and your gallon jug of water and your Versa Gripps and your headphones and your camera and your tripod?

Yep. Not quite as simple and easy as StrongLifts but very flexible and easy enough once you get the hang of it.

If you have a peloton subscription the strength + app will do this. If not, probably not worth the monthly cost just for this.

That Strong app looks....strong.

I use SmartGym. It will do everything you are asking for. It looks to be a bit more expensive than Strong ($30/yr) and SmartGym ($60/yr).

Does Strong allow for body weight exercises?

Yeah it has a ton of exercises. Here's a quick snapshot of part of the list.

Before I got a Tonal I used the Jefit app, then started using my Garmin app to track on my watch which worked surprisingly fine when I built my program in the app for my watch (complete with rest intervals and all).

I'm right where you are at, OP. Was looking for an app that worked via Apple Watch. Essentially it came down to Strong vs Hevy. Since I'm unsure of what all I want, I went with Hevy because you get more routines, etc, in the free version.

I've setup 3 routines with reps, weights, etc and it will tie to my Apple Watch so I don't need to carry my phone around. Really simple to setup, ton of exercises to choose from or you can select routines they have built already. I think Strong is probably identical just get more from Hevy for free if that matters.

All that said, I haven't actually used it yet in the gym but will start the next few days on that.

fwiw, Fitbod seems to have really good customer service. I emailed them with a couple questions I could find answers to and they responded very promptly with detailed instruction on how to do what I was interested in doing.

I used to worry about this when I started using an app (RP Hypertrophy) and found I really only use the app and my timer between sets. I rarely ever doom scroll while training. But, I absolutely love to train. I tend to just listen to music, think about my next set and stare into nothing between sets. I love NOT having to look at a screen for once. Hell, I barely look at people, and the people watching at my gym is next level given the athletes that train there. But I love that I can unplug from the world and go into my own world. So the app has worked great.
