48 year old out of shape desk jockey. Today I woke up feeling fine and at some point during the morning, with no rhyme or reason, my back just tightened up and is very painful. Would tramadol or ibuprofen be better for the pain until i can get into urgent care in the morning.

Thanks in advance.

Not a doctor. Possibly just back spasm. Over the counter nsaids and heat and cold therapy are what I do.

Get a foam roller or a lacrosse ball and go to town on the parts that are tight.

I prefer the lacrosse ball and wedge it between my back and a wall. I'll roll around on the wall until I find a trigger point and lean into it until it releases.

I usually recommend 600mg ibuprofen with 1000 mg Tylenol together every 6 hours. A heating pad and massage may help, as will gentle movement. Just laying in bed will feel good temporarily, but will likely just make you stiffer.

Usually when these come into the ER I recommend local anesthetic injections into the muscle to get the spasm to release.

I hate tramadol, as I think it is a dirty drug with lots of side effects and never recommend it for anything. It will help with pain, but I would never prescribe it.

My low back seizes up once in a while. If you sit a lot it could be tight hip flexors or hamstrings. I got tight last week - tried to slowly touch my toes with straight legs and hamstrings started screaming at me. Slowly stretched them out and low back pain went from like a 7 to a 2. Kept stretching them the next few days and it completely went away.

Just my recent experience. When the back ain't right life is miserable.
