I'm at the gym now and can tell I've got something going on with me. I'm still lifting just way lighter. I've noticed over the years that sometimes going to the gym helps my body get going and feeling better. A good friend of mine is of the same opinion. If you got enough energy to make it in go ahead and go and get the blood pumping.

But I also know plenty of people that are more of the opinion if they aren't feeling well then they should stay home and rest.

How about you guys?

When younger, I would power through it.

Now at 52, I lay off.

I generally feel better after a workout, but if I don't sleep particularly well, I'll take a day off.

Re: congestion, I once read that if it's in your head, you're good to go for a workout, but if it's in your chest, you should hold off.

Depends on a number of factors. I currently have some kind of virus. Very mild. I am also on week 6 of an 8 week mesocycle where all sets are 1-0 reps in reserve or beyond failure with myo-sets etc. I have been killing it in the gym this week. I also am 52, but very advanced and well trained. BUT, that is me. And, if I feel high levels of fatigue, I either deload or stay home. Training builds up fatigue. Having an illness also builds up fatigue. At some point, they work against you and both the illness and the training add up and the body can't recover from either as well. Not good. So I would play it by ear. How is your sleep? Illnesses can affect my sleep greatly. That adds another element to things that isn't good. A short time off won't hurt anything nor slow your actual progress much if at all.

Also, if you have a fever, don't train. Likelihood is you won't want to train anyway if you have a fever. But that is when the fatigue thing can really become an issue. Deal with the biggest priority first. We do this for vanity, sure (at least I do and most hypertrophy chasers do as well). But we also do this for our health and, well, when you are sick, you aren't healthy.

Rest and let your body do its thing to heal itself.

Depends on a lot of factors. If I'm contagious, I'm not going to the gym. If I've got gastro issues, I'm not going to do anything that requires a lot of core bracing.

Depends I guess. If I am congested and coughing hacking I won't swim. But I will cycle at the house. I can hack into a towel. Same for running. Maybe just zone 2 stuff. But I hate missing or not doing something to get my HR up everyday.

If I have a common cold, I'll go on a run to clear the congestion. It helps.

I'm very fortunate that I rarely get sick but unless I am just running a high fever or chills and can't get out of bed then I will probably do something physical. Some light lifting and light cardio will make me feel a lot better whether it's a good idea or not. I also feel like it helps me not lose traction with my progress.

I used to always do this. I did this last November and ended up coughing up blood on multiple occasions

Gyms are breeding grounds for contagious disease because people that are sick from a virus etc. running fever, coughing, etc. often go to the gym and spread it to everyone else.
If I'm sick, especially with a fever, I don't go to the gym out of pure courtesy to not infect everyone else.

Move everyday, no matter what.

Train when you're sick, just back off the intensity and volume.

I've heard people refer to the "Neck Rule":
-Symptoms above the neck (runny nose, congestion, sore throat) are generally safe to train through.
-Symptoms below the neck (body aches, chest congestion, stomach issues) require you to change it up or dial it back, or take a full rest day.

For me, movement is the best medicine, even if it means getting outside for a 5 minute walk.

If I am not miserable and trying to sleep it off, like flu symptoms, or "digestive issues" then I'll work out. I might dial down the intensity or duration some. I usually feel better during and afterwards. You will need more sleep though, more recovery.

I do have a rather extensive home gym setup so I can do my workouts at home and not affect others.

Usually I push through it if it's just a cold or cough. But I never get sick. But I had the flu in January that knocked the crap out of me. Fever for several days. I considered running Houston Marathon anyways since my fever had gone away. But I did a short jog the night before and just coughed the whole time so I opted out.

I did 7.5 hours of training from 4 pm Saturday to 5 pm Sunday. About 8:30 last night my throat started hurting pretty bad. Been hacking up phlegm all day. Took a day off from training to see if I can shake it. :/
