That was good.
Probably camouflage has been used throughout history, but the British were the first to use black clad skirmishers (shown starting about 1:30 in the attached video).

Great book series. Discovers them in HS. Read them all out of order but didn't care. The shows are meh, imho but worth a watch. There's a pretty neat FB group I follow of 95th reenactors over in England.
Also used to a limited extent by the Germans in WWII, as with the ill fated MV Goya (pictured below).

That crazy camouflage doesn't work at the range depicted in the pictures but put them out on the horizon at 7+ miles and it does.
I remember watching a PBS show on camouflage a few years ago and it is crazy how some of this works on the human eye. They stuck two armored vehicles out in the desert on the horizon in the day time and you could see them. Then they both turned on high intensity lights pointed in the direction of the camera and they disappeared--crazy.

When I was teaching, we had a author visit, Chris Barton hecame and talked about his book "Dazzle Ships: World War I and the Art of Confusion" it was an interesting book and I would recommend it if you want to get your kids reading about history.

Naming something that looks like that the "Goya" just works.
