Random question based off of the picture from the capital that the guy was trying to figure out...

All of the pics that you see from the revolutionary war era Washington, Adams, Jefferson, etc are all clean shaven. Fast forward 100 years and everyone is bearded. Is that a true reflection of how guys went? Or were the paintings of the founding fathers so hard to come by or rare that they shaved before they sat for their paintings? Was it simply a style of the time or did the styles change? Just struck me as curious and something I've never really thought about.

Facial hair was not in style in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Even the Corps of Discovery that explored the Louisiana Territory shaved twice a week as required by Army Regulations.
