What a study in contrast:

P-47: "OK, we got us a big honking engine! Now let's build an airframe around it!"

P-51: "OK, we have this terrific airfoil with laminar flow. Hey, what do you suppose would happen if we swapped out that Allison power plant with a 2-stage supercharged Rolls Royce Merlin 66? I bet we could coax a few more mph out of it."
