So my Internet rabbit hole this past week has been Fort Bascom, a post once occupying the south side of the Canadian River, north of present day Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Among its claims to fame is being the base of operations for the largest Indian Battle of the Civil War, and perhaps the largest in history, other than The Little Big Horn. Kit Carson and a force of about 300, plus two mountain howitzers, face down around 1,000 Indians in the Texas Panhandle in 1864.

This is in the same place as the 1874 Battle of Adobe Walls, where Billy Dixon and 25 other buffalo hunters faced around 300 Indians. And where Dixon unhorsed an Indian at 7/8 of a mile, with his Sharps Buffalo Rifle.

Learned a lot, which I'll try to share over a few posts. Would enjoy hearing anything you know about it.

The biggest remnant of Bascom is a brick wall, that used to be part of their corral. It sits behind the Panhandle-Plains Museum, here in Canyon, Texas

Long video, but you can run it at 1.25 or 1.5 speed and get through it quickly. Presentation by Dr. James Bailey Blackshear, the author of Fort Bascom: Soldiers, Comancheros, and Indians in the Canadian River Valley
