UXO in Saipan.



The largest were U.S. 5 inch HE shells and a 100 lbs GP bomb. Lots of mortar rounds and hand grenades. Most of it unfired Japanese ordnance.

I worked with a guy was coast guard in the early 90s and did a tour on Iwo Jima. This was around the time the Japanese government was trying to repatriate remains. Said he go to accompany workers in tunnels and found tons of UXOs. Surprisingly he said little human remains. Just debris from the war.

He was also a hoot to work with. When it was hot as hell in august you could steer him towards a coast guard story or a previous job story (that he'd told at least a dozen times prior) and get yourself a good half hour in his office and AC. Now he's the head park ranger at LBJ farms.
