Quote:

Young enlisted the help of world-renowned auctioneer Sotheby's to help analyze the bust. Through the company's familiarity with Roman antiques, they estimated the piece was an authentic, roughly 2,000-year-old piece of Roman artwork.

So it may have been looted from Germany by an Allied (probably American) soldier and ended up in a Goodwill for $35.

It's being sent back to Germany next year.

Why not send it back to Rome?

It was taken from Germany, so it'll be repatriated to Germany. I think it was taken from a museum, so there may have already been an agreement between Germany and Italy concerning the items.

Can you imagine holding something that is thousands of years old in your hands? It is mind boggling even more so for me than finding a fossil, because this is something that was made by hand by a human being.
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

So when are the Brits going to go give back all the priceless artifacts that they plundered from around the world?

If you go to the Hermitage there is a fabulous art collection with labels "acquired from the Berlin Museum 1945". The significance is it was probably stolen from Jewish possessions.

Went to the Chinese Cultural Museum in Taipei once. Multi-story building with a different medium on each floor- i.e. bronze, gold, jade, ivory, tapestry, painting, etc. saw items from as early 5 BC I think it was. Pretty amazing stuff when consider the limited tools they had and probably took a large portion of their life making that one thing. Mind blowing.

I've been there too and completely agree. When I see things that were made by hand 2000 years ago, I expect it look janky or aboriginal. In this case, most of the artifiacts on display would be objectively considered works of art even if created today. Same goes for what the Greco Roman world was able to achieve.

It's amazing what people accomplished when they didn't have so many readily available (and mostly meaningless) distractions.

Yeah the Romans really had the good life. All 30 years or so (on average)

You could try harder to miss the point but I doubt you could. Also, lighten up.

That 30 year number takes into account infant mortality. Your odds of living into your 50s or 60s were pretty good if you survived infancy.
