Imperial Tragedy by Thomas Coffey is fascinating. It covers two months in detail, December 1941 and August 1945, but fills in a lot of the blanks before and after.

I enjoyed Edwin Hoyt's Japan's War. This book examined the origins of Japan launching WWII back to the 1850s.
