Do you professional historians, or enthusiastic amateurs have any truly good suggestions on the Banana Wars? Books about? Documentaries? Oral History? Anecdotal stories? I was in Honduras, but mission requirements left little time to explore my personal interests.

I realize I'm not a constant poster, but none of you know anything about the USMC and the "Banana Wars?" Turn in your EGAs!!!

The History Board never fails to entertain. The "Banana Wars" were an extended USMC action between the 1920s-30s. I am reading some of the published history of that action now. I wondered if any one else knew of a detailed telling. Apparently, I over looked the animated series of the history, failed to search for the "Banana Splits", forgot about "Raisin Bran with Banana chips" - and I'm feeling some remorse for my narrowed view. If anyone had/has an interest in USMC conquest in Central America in the first third of the 20th century, I would be happy to read a text from you.

"Marine! The Life of Chesty Puller" has some great chapters about the Banana Wars.

I remember one excerpt that stuck with me. He was leading a patrol with a local guerilla guide. They were ambushed and Chesty hit the ground to take cover. The guide told him that he had set a bad example with his men. Later in the South Pacific he would light his pipe at night in the open to draw enemy fire to expose their positions.

My dad served with him in WWII and Korea. Said he would have followed Chesty anywhere. Anytime.
