I'm en-route back to Texas from a superb trip to Eastern Europe. I picked up a piece of WW2 memorabilia (circa 1939) in Warsaw written in German and Polish. It's a warning to civilians to not create issues with German soldiers, with death as a stated consequence.

I know what it says in German, but I'm looking for someone who has quality Polish skills to do the best possible interpretation possible. Might anyone have an good Polish-speaking leads?

Wouldn't it say the same thing in Polish as it did in German?

Can you post a pic? I'd like to see it.

These languages don't always sync-up verbatim.

I'd like to obtain the straightest interpretation of each language as-is possible.

I'll see if I can post a pic when I get home.

Did you buy it from the corner shop in Warsaw in the old town near the very nice Catholic church?

I know several native polish speakers but nobody I want to bother right now. The best I can do is offer my wife who can speak and read some polish but she is not native.

The church.

Dr. Jim Mazurkeiwicz on campus would be the best bet. Don't have a phone number.

My first thought as well. If OP would post the photo I can get it to Dr. Jim to figure out as I do have his contact info. Even if he cant read it, he will know someone who can as he knows probably half the people in Poland at this point.

Okay, here is some real history...Straight from Poland in 1939.

I'm trying to get a word-for-word interpretation, but here is the crux of what I've got this far:

"To the citizens: Anyone who approaches a vermacht soldier in possession of a weapon will be shot. Anyone who attacks and gets away, their entire village will be shot. If you comply with these instructions, you have nothing to fear. - The Commanding General"

Can anyone get a tighter word-for-word interpretation?

Thanks in-advance!!

A sincere thank you again for the interpretation assist…That's exactly what I was hoping to nail down!!

I'll snap a picture once the framing gets done…I truly love WW2 history and am getting a pretty good collection of artifacts going. If anyone has any WW2 stuff they want to re-home, please do let me know!!
