X-posted from the Outdoors Board.

A friend strongly recommended the book in the subject line so I picked it up at my local library. What a great book! I sort of vaguely knew that Browning was important in the development of firearms, but I had no idea how truly important he was, what a genius he was, and how so many guns today are essentially just copies of his original designs. As just one example, in World War II our 50 cal. machine gun (both water and air cooled variants), the BAR, and the 1911 were all his designs.

I highly recommend the book.

Browning was amazing to be sure. My dad used a model M1918-A2 BAR in the Pacific

That's why I use the Clyde Barrow procurement method and pick 'em up at National Guard Armories, they're cheaper that way and full automatic.

The M1918A2 did not have a semi-auto option like the M1918 and the M1918A1. You had slow automatic or fast automatic options only.

There was an episode of "Tales of the Gun" devoted to John Browning and his guns.

You can watch it here:

If you ever get to Ogden, Utah, check out the Union Station Museum. Obviously it is centered around trains, with a static display of locomotives and cars, but inside there is a section devoted to John Moses Browning and his firearms. There is a small display of antique cars along with an HO scale operating model train and some traveling exhibit space as well. I was SLC in October of 2016 with 3 coworkers for a two week site survey of the Chevron refinery; over the weekend we drove to Ogden to see the UP museum, and Hill AFB museum and display. One of the guys was so enthralled by the Browning exhibit he missed the car display and model train set up. The whole museum was amazing and well worth the trip.
