A young person first time looking at a world map might well guess that an almost isolated island like Ireland would have a mostly peaceful history.
Then real history starts to be learned and the aggressiveness of humans begins to become plain.

Slightly related, but I've been paying a lot more attention to British history lately and I'm still pretty shocked by the amount of times that island was invaded and conquered by outsiders.
