The story is very interesting and there are lots of historic photos.


Found an old (1956?) video with lots more great photography.
This was in 1916 so just predated the bitterness of WW1.

Someone might think about providing Ol' Sarge with one of those early armored cars.
I think he would fit right in there, but I can't see him as one the early aviators.

Patton commanded the 5th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Clark in the late 1930's. They were specifically left at Fort Clark during WWI to counter the threat of Mexican incursions into Texas. They were still chasing Mexican bandits and smugglers even in the 1930's when my Grandfather was in B Troop.

My sons and I spent the night in Cloudcroft New Mexico and we stayed in a hotel - The Lodge at Cloudcroft- where the president of Mexico and Pancho Villa had a meeting to discuss his surrender/slowing down.

Nice hotel - ghost stories, stories of a mafia speakeasy, tunnels underground to escape the cops, Judy garland and Clark gable stayed there and inscribed their name on the wall and pancho villa met with the President of Mexico. Also a bar from one of Al Capone speakeasy with bulllet hole - you gotta look real close. Last one is that Conrad Hilton lived there in the 1930's.

The last commander of Fort Clark before WWII was Gen. Wainright, who got "promoted" to the job in the Phillippines, where he would be captured by the Japanese.

My wife's grandfather was Pershing's personal driver while his Iowa unit was sent to chase Pancho Villa. After WWI ended, Pershing sent him a spent artillery casing that had been crafted into an ash tray. Her grandfather said the note that came with it from Pershing stated it was from one of the last few artillery rounds fired by the US in WWI. About 15 months ago we came across a box of old photos that included a few dozen from his time on the border that were taken on the border. Of course, none of them are showing combat….just young men in their camps. We've thought we should send them to some military museum in Iowa before they get lost forever.
