Ironically both Texas and Texas A M are burdened by the same thing. Two coaches labeled as geniuses who go brain dead from time to time.
You are not a play caller genius when in back to back semifinal games you call eight terrible plays from the 20. And you are not a play calling genius when, with the game on the line, you have Reggie Bush standing on the sideline on a fourth and one. Steve Sarkisian has publicly admitted that he made that call.
I have a good friend who has always said that no matter how good a coach is, they still need a logic guy. Someone who is not a technical coach, but who has the common sense to tell the coach this is not working or every time you do this something good happens, so keep doing that.
Now I think AM still has a great team and will compete for all of it. But last night Elko was not a genius defensive coach. The Georgia defense knows how to beat Texas. It is on tape. You have to pressure and be disruptive. The four man front was not getting it done. With Arch and that offensive line, when you bring more than they can block, about eighty percent of the time something good happens for the defense.
I remember last year an undefeated Indiana team came into Columbus feeling pretty good about themselves and OSU beat the hell out of them after they started blitzing like every other play. Once they committed to pressure the whole game flipped.
On offense all Elko had to do was grind the Arkansas tape. Actually the Film Guy (he is great) already had the game plan for him. He just said let Reed be who he is and do not force him to be something he is not. Arkansas offensively totally abused the Horns. Their no name tight end had a career day. Ironically Elko was wearing a GRIND sweatshirt but he did not grind the tape.
That is the tale of the two geniuses.
Good luck with the playoff and any argument for Texas to be in the playoff with three losses is just that, an argument. They are not going anywhere and deservedly so.
