I notice that whenever we are hiring somebody, it is almost never that the guy we started out thinking. And most of these guys are little to no "hype" for the next OC. Here are who I think will be our guy

Jerrod Johnson: Former A&M QB who made CJ Stroud statistically better in "advanced" stats. Risky hire due to no play calling experience, but would be very a high upside hire. We also need a QB coach so it would fit right in.

Tim Beck: Vandy OC, not the former Longhorn. We just got a massive pay increase for our staff, thank you Elko, so no one is out of our reach. Vandy has no "star" player outside of Pavia, so it is all Beck and Pavia.

Chip Kelly: Constantly does well in college but fails in the NFL, would be an expensive guy but would be a "safe" bet

Holomon Wiggins: Our current WR coach, in-house hire that is risky. My biggest worry about him is that he has no play calling experience. He is

Mack Leftwich: Texas Tech OC, this guy would take a lot of money to get away from Tech. However I think he could be great.

No one is out of our reach now thanks to the staff pay increase. I wouldn't be surprised if none of these guys are hired and we go for a G5 school's OC. However these are the guys that I think could get hired. The two guys that I want are Beck and Johnson

What about Billy Napier?
Gyles Marrett

Applying myself.

Resume:
-Will not call trick plays on the goal line
-Will not call a deep shot on 3rd and 2 after consecutive 4 yard gains on 1st and 2nd downs

**just a joke, actually liked Klein a lot. 2-3 terrible decisions I've ever seen him make. I'm sure if they had worked we'd call him a genius on those 2-3 though.

Can't we just get Jimbo since he's already on the payroll.

Chip Kelly - would be a disaster.
Jerrod Johnson - may need more time. But also I think he is wanting to stay in the NFL.
Wiggins - May be the easiest considering he is the "In house" OC. Great recruiter however, could be potentially another Elijah Robinson issue being that he may not be ready (even though he is 45) but being the Co-Oc currently it may force our hand.

Find a prolific offense led by a smart younger guy who is at a smaller school who has the ability to be here for at least 2-3 years similar to Klein. He will eventually leave if he does a good job or be pushed out if it is bad. Hopefully with ties to the state of Texas or other important recruiting pipelines.

North Texas OC - Jordan Davis
Utah OC - Jason Beck
TTU OC - Mark Leftwich (May be difficult to pry away as Tech will probably increase pay)
ECU OC - John David Baker

At year 3 of the Elko era, I feel like he would want a guy with experience, but at what cost? If we don't promote Wiggins, how long will be remain on staff?

Wiggins has had experience under Sark, Bill O'Brien, and Tommy Rees. Some respected play callers (and trusted in the Saban regime).

I would not recommend hiring anyone who hasn't called plays before. That is huge risk.

Related side story: Had a family friend get hired as Vanderbilt's OC, when Clark Lea was hired. He had never called plays before. He was demoted from calling plays before even the first game.

It's just a whole different animal with that responsibility.

Jerrod Johnson is a legitimate up and coming coach who genuinely loves A&M. I'm not totally against giving a talented coach his first chance at play calling duties, but Johnson's coaching experience is 100% NFL. I would trust Elko's judgment on whether Jerrod is ready for that or not.

Wiggins, on the other hand, has a wealth of experience in high level college football. Having coached under Saban and Elko, I think he's learned from the right people. If we were to give someone their first shot at playcalling, I think he's a logical choice. People talk about him like he's some kid not ready for the job, but he's 45 years old and has been coaching college football since 2003.

Chip Kelly makes a lot of sense. He's a proven offensive mastermind at the college level, and available now thanks to the Raiders suckage. He'll probably be entertaining multiple offers, so we should only pursue him if that's who Elko really wants as his #1 choice.

Napier is a big "no thanks" for me. He oversaw DJ Lagway's lack of development.

I would love Napier. There are enough factors at play for me to believe that Lagway's lack of dev could be due to several other things. He's available now. He's a guy who Saban hired as an analyst, and thought highly enough of him to REHIRE him.

This is a good assessment although I wouldn't really want Kelly. I know he has a history of being a very good OC but he jumps around too much.

I don't think money will be a factor in whoever we hire. We just need to get the best OC we can.

Chip Kelly would do a great job as OC. However, as history repeats itself, he would get an offer as an HC right around November 31st, 2026.

Jerrod interviewed for multiple NFL OC positions last year. He got a big raise to stay with the Texans. He may not view an OC position at the college level as a step forward in his career. We'd be lucky but unlikely to get him.

I'd be very hesitant to hire anyone who has not called plays before. What if it becomes apparent he's not capable? Who takes over? Especially since Elko is a defensive guru. Offensive HCs like Kiffin or Sark could take that chance, not Elko.

Promote Wiggins, pay whatever it takes to bring Jerrod in to Coach QBs!

Consistency in culture, recruiting, and possibly scheme. Lets not mess with a good thing!

Fix that by implementing a claw-back policy in his contract. Guarantee the money, but penalize for leaving early.

All this talk of Napier makes me laugh. Like Jimbo, he's getting paid a lot of money to not coach so why would he want to come here for OC role?

He's a worse version of Sumlin on offense. Great offensive mind. Worst nightmare for his own DC.

His teams will be up tempo and score 45 points a game. Yet there is a reason they don't win. He hangs his defense out to dry playing way too many minutes a game and they give up even more points than they score.

He's the perfect example of what a defensive minded coach like Elko knows not to hire.

We're looking for someone similar to what we had this year. A balanced (run and pass) offense capable of going up tempo and be explosive when needed, but otherwise is happy slightly winning time of possession and scoring 38 points a game to complement the defense and win 10+ games.

Maybe he still wants to be actively involved in the game and has ambition to get another chance at a head coaching job?

Maybe he's not lazy and doesn't want to sit around his house doing nothing?

Maybe he wants to double-dip and earn a very good salary in addition to what Florida is paying him?
