I don't think it will ever not be controversial. Still, there are 12 teams in the playoffs.

12 teams.

If the "true" best team (often just a loosely based construct) didn't make it in those 12 teams I don't want to hear MAJOR complaining. Sure, why is team X ranked above team Y? but you had a chance to get into the top 12 with 0-2 losses. Good enough.

My interpretation is that if BYU loses, they are out of the playoff. Is that the consensus?

yes, by a mile. They're already ranked outside of it.
