I believe that the reason the major conference championships have diminished meaning is because we simply do not play enough games in the conference.
Right now, there are 4 one loss teams in the SEC. The best way to differentiate the teams to arrive at a champion is to either let all 4 play for the championship or to continue playing. Otherwise, we have abstract tiebreakers percolating throughout the season which I think diminish the point of the game with is to allow for the common human virtues to prevail on the field of play.
If you simulate a SEC week 9 with no common opponents:
Game 1: Alabama vs. Florida
Game 2: Georgia vs. Oklahoma
Game 3: Texas vs. LSU
Game 4: Auburn vs. Tennessee
Game 5: Texas A&M vs. Ole Miss
Game 6: Arkansas vs. Kentucky
Game 7: Mississippi State vs. Missouri
Game 8: South Carolina vs. Vanderbilt
I think at a minimum TAMU and Ole Miss playing in this scenario would help to solidify the championship game.
