I've come up with a way to help show how much better or worse, top to bottom, some conferences are compared to others.

Take teams that finished 6 or 7th (or which ever place) from each conference and move them to another conference for the following season.

Once they have had their asses kicked or kicked some ass in their temporary conference, they move back the year after.

It would be awesome to watch the SEC 7th ranked team finished 1 or 2 in every other conf.

Relegation you say? Id love a form of Relegation like they use in euro soccer.

Not a promotion or relegation. Just a middle to lower team making a one year change.

I mean, where would Arky have finished in the Big 10 or 12 this year?

Relegation is stupid.

Well, this is not relegation. It's prove how deep your league is compared to others.

Not sure you are aware but teams change from one year to another, sometimes drastically. It's not like 5 v5 pickup ball and you say let's run it back again. Kids graduate, go to the nfl, transfer schools, coaches leave.
How does the 7th ranked sec team play in the big10, big12, and acc?
Other than the above awesome idea!

This wouldn't tell us much, especially in the transfer portal era. Rosters have too much turnover year over year for this to reveal anything meaningful.

It's really hard to say because their defense was really, really, bad. Had they played the bottom 8 in the B1G, I think they win at least 4.

They could win a lot more of those but you have to remember that a lot of Arky's issues were self inflicted wounds so you can guarantee that they would find a way to lose some games regardless of a talent advantage they might have.

The Arky game was a 'stain' on our resume, along with USCe, but the score doesn't depict the game.

We were rolling them in the first half but let them double dip going into half cause of a 3 and out.

Then we pulled away in the 2nd half but they get a late score to make it look close again.

There is a way more beneficial solution that actually improves on the regular season and provides significantly more data points for evaluating teams.

Remove the 3 cupcake games versus G5/FCS teams from all P4 teams schedules. Replace them with 3 weeks of P4 vs P4 games. Essentially SEC v Big Ten one week (ACC plays B12), SEC v ACC one week, and SEC v B12 one week. There would be some slight modifications due to conferences being of different sizes. The G5 can do the same if they believe it would be beneficial, but who cares.

Even with random assignments each year, the better conferences will easily be revealed, and from the B12 or ACC's perspective, their top team going 3-0 is beneficial for them as well.

Obviously teams change. Doesn't have to be the 7th ranked team. The point of a one year switch is to give fans, media, committee another metic.

Over a few years you should have pretty solid idea about strength of depth from league to league

OP's idea isn't just turning conferences upside down, but you're going sideways with decades long budgeting and capex plans and programs.

Edit... Not to make ESPN's head any bigger.... but would any media company put up with the idea that their broadcast markets (that they've paid handsomely for with conference media deals) be turned upside down annually.

Also, are you talking football only or do you want womens basketball taking overnight coast to coast flights on a tuesday?

A team is not making a temp move for performing exceptional or poorly.

In soccer, teams are demoted or promoted.

This would have to be a planned and agreed upon change. Not something that works now. And yes I think fans might enjoy traveling to new venues or host new/different teams. The fluidity of conference over the past few decades isn't exactly easy for ADs and conferences.

I'm talking football only. But, i'd imagine there are Big10 women's basketball teams with rediculous travel.

Look at the ACC now! They've got weekday travel in non-revenue sports that is coast to coast. I know we all like to talk football, but there absolutely are still student athletes on campus who are playing their sport for their love of the game and the scholarship. Mens's basketball (mixed bag that will see the next level) on Tuesday nights. Women's basketball (mostly done after college, some small $$ WNBA) is I think Wednesday nights. Volleyball, soccer, Men's baseball (generally OOC matchups on weekdays but still a concern with Friday evening and Sunday travel)... It's got to be an absolute mess!!!

One of the big reasons I (not to inflate my own self importance) HATED the idea of us going PAC12 w/ tu in 2010!

With 7 minutes left in the game, the score was 38 / 35 A&M. I guess you can say A&M pulled away by scoring a touchdown. The difference of the game is that Ark turned the ball over on downs in the first half. On 4th and 1, Ark decides to throw an incomplete pass. There is a decent chance A&M loses the game if Ark converts.

Just as an fyi:

Total Yards: A&M 497 / Ark 527
Scoring Drives: 7 A&M / 7 Ark
Total Possessions: 9 A&M / 10 Ark
Punts: 2 A&M / 2 Ark
Passing: 280 A&M /259 Ark
Rushing: 217 A&M / 268 Ark
4th Down Conversions: 3-3 A&M / 1-2 Ark
