In all semi seriousness. There was a video clip of Rubio and Trump discussing the CFP and Rubio light heartedly ask Trump to look into the CFP if Miami was overlooked.

I may have the memory of the convo being slightly wrong….but I do remember the "look into CFP" comment.

No. The committee didn't want the fallout of leaving the ACC out after Virginia lost. Then the entire conference is up in arms screaming. This way it's only 1 independent fan base upset. If Virginia had won, ND would have been left in and JM left out. Pretty screwed up either way. Format still broken and needs fixing. No disrespect to Tulane and JM but those brackets look weak. Put ND and Vandy in those slots and it looks much more interesting.

This. They sure as hell didn't get the best 12 teams in. I thought this was what it was all about.

No, it's not about getting the best 12 teams in.

Exactly. The CFP rules would have to be re-written if this happened and that would just be an even bigger mess.

JMU and Tulane are a waste of a spot.

A college football playoff should never begin the bracket with 20+ point underdogs.

It's supposed to be but isn't and never will be until they quit giving auto bids and just start taking the top ranked teams. But any and all playoff changes require a unanimous vote from all conferences and ND, so eliminating guaranteed inclusion factors won't happen until the SEC and Big10 say enough is enough or the playoffs are expanded to a point where it's a moot issue.

Im not so sure it had much to do with thr acc vs looking like dumbasses for choosing notre dame over miami when there was a dorect head to head result.

There was one spot left before the weekend- notre dame's spot. And there's just no logical reason to put them in over miami

While that may be true, it was a terrible look to not do that the previous week and wait until Virginia lost and both Miami and ND were idle. Perception with fan bases is everything when there is little transparency in the decision making process other than a very limited question and answer session immediately following the announcements.

That's actually under discussion right now. In fact, the deadline for talks between the CFP and ESPN was recently extended from December 1st to January 23rd. And that extension was approved about 2 weeks ago before all this SHTF so I'd imagine talks are much more intense.

People are confused about what the issue is. They simply need to expand the field to 24. The committee will still do stupid things with invites and seeding but at least the arguments between the number 24 and 25 team is far less controversial. I honestly believe that teams like ND, Texas and even Vanderbilt could make a run in the playoffs. The side benefit is that on campus playoff games are amazing and we should have more of them and fewer boring bowl games. I think we should have playoff similar to the NIT. Then we finally prove who is stronger the SEC or the rest of the CFB.

I think we need to go back to before there were playoffs. Everyone wants to keep expanding the playoffs, increasing the number of games required to win a NC. As if these best players aren't dramatically increasing the risk of injury. And for what? So a bunch of folks who don't risk anything can try to eliminate the argument about who really deserves it? We will never eliminate the arguments. I don't think we should try. Arguing is part of the attraction! It's like reviewing calls: delays games so much they have to keep the clock running on out of bounds to shorten the game, yet it adds nothing really to the game.

from what I read, they already have to pay! now its just a matter of degree!

$150,000 for making the field
$250,000 (total, not more) for making quarter final

I can appreciate this perspective while feeling the exact opposite. I hope those teams get trucked. If the sport is going to nakedly consolidate around the schools and conferences with the most money, which is happening regardless of on field results, then let's get on with it.

Having Tulane or JMU up jump the devil might prolong this interstitial space the sport currently sits it, where we have to pretend, for contractual and antitrust reasons, that JMU and Tulane are playing the same game as OSU, Oregon, Texas, A&M, UGA, etc. College sports as a true connection to a college is dead, at the highest level, the patient and family simply havent accepted it. I say move to the 40 team super league now rather than dillying around with this fake participation trophy *****

Iowa playing in some stupid bowl is better? How many times in the 100+ years both teams have been playing football has A&M played Iowa do you think?

The answer is once in over 100 years. We built a system dependent on comparing leagues who almost NEVER play one another. If we had a vastly expanded playoff they would play every now and then and we would find out. Instead we cling to the stupid bowl system with conference tie ins. And every time we expand the playoffs we ignore the other issue of the bowl games getting more and more terrible.

yes, it is.

iowa has no business being in a playoff for the championship

I love bowls, but if they got rid of them I get it. they are probably not long for this world. maybe an NIT type tournament is the solution.

That's the whole point. Put them in the playoffs and let's find out instead of relying on your opinion.

iowa lost to the 4 teams with a pulse they played. we don't need to see ohio state beat them to prove they don't belong in the playoff.
