Since the first round of CFP games aren't bowls, does that mean losers technically didn't play a bowl game?

The CFP actually gets all the ticket revenue and then distributes it out.

I think the first two rounds of the CFP should be at bowl games. The semi-finals should be home games (a real advantage for being top 4) and the final a bowl game.
