On what he told his team after missing the playoffs:

Quote:

"The message was just, hey, we had control over this at Alabama and at Texas, and we did not do enough. I think it's really important that we take ownership over the things that we did have control over rather than complain about whatever decisions are being left out. Like, we can't be victims in this situation, because I think there's a level of entitlement that exists in that. That cuts against the DNA of our program. So, the conversation was, hey, the world expects us to be disappointed right now, but what we are is excited."

This guy is a leader. The fact is, there were too many teams with two losses this year to fit them all into the playoff. So if you lost two games (or three), you put yourself in a position where you might get left out. Maybe you don't like the decision the committee made. Maybe you thought your schedule was too hard. But if you leave your fate to the whims of a dozen old guys in a hotel conference room, you might be disappointed. That's life. Instead of whining, focus on removing all doubt next time.

I loved Clark Lea's response. There were too many Power 4 teams that finished 10-2 or better in the regular season, and there isn't enough room for all of them. 6 SEC teams finished 10-2 or better: 12-1 SEC Champion Georgia (7-1 SEC), 11-1 (7-1 SEC) Ole Miss, 10-2 (6-2 SEC), 11-1 (7-1 SEC) Texas A&M, 10-3 (7-1 SEC) SEC Runner-Up Alabama, 10-2 (6-2 SEC) Oklahoma, and 10-2 (6-2 SEC) Vanderbilt. 5 of those 6 teams all won their Power 4 nonconference games, and the only exception was Alabama's 31-17 road loss to 5-7 (2-6 ACC) Florida State.

Very surprised more teams didn't make a strong run at him. He'd be a much better hire than Kiffin imho.

I corrected Georgia's record to 12-1 and Alabama's record to 10-3 after including the SEC Championship Game outcome.

And he is right in what he said and I stated this in another thread. Vanderbilt just lost the wrong games to get in at 10-2
Had they beaten Bama and maybe lost to Mizzou instead, they get in by eliminating Bama with everything else playing out the way it did.

Agree with everything he said. Ags should take that same attitude.

We failed in Austin. That is entirely on us. Be surly about it for a few hours, then move on and learn what you can from it. And come out better on the other side of it.

So everyone assumes that and doesn't try to money whip him like every other HC?

Y'all should look more into Kalen DeBoer's history.
He's not a Pacific NW guy at all.
Started coaching in the late '90's, and the first time he we went to the west coast was in 2019, via Fresno St.

Giving off Mark Few vibes. And it's not like Vandy doesn't have money. And Nashville is an awesome city. And God help us if Vandy ever fires a coach who gets 8+ wins every year.

I did not state Pacific NW, my point was more that he's not a fit at Alabama and that is very easy to see.

The turn around Cignetti made at Indiana in 2 years is remarkable, even historic. If Clark Lea can sustain this success at Vandy in the SEC, that is possibly just as, or more impressive.

Every team from the SEC that got in had a top 10 level road win except UGA, and they beat Bama at a "neutral" site, plus Texas and Ole Miss.

Far more impressive to win at Vandy as there are 2-3x the quality teams in the SEC to have to beat. Indiana maybe has 3 good wins in this "historic run".

I agree, he's a Vandy guy. Kiffin isn't a guy of any school. He's just a Kiffin guy.

I'm not saying teams won't try it but I think it will be very difficult. My guess is if he were to leave at some point it would be to jump to the NFL. He isn't going to go somewhere in-conference so what does that leave? A B1G team? He just pulled a 5* QB away from UGa. If he can recruit to Vandy, no reason to go elsewhere. Obviously he can win there. Its his school, his team. At some point money becomes irrelevant.

As we've learned from schools like Michigan State, Texas Tech, Indiana, etc., it doesn't take an army of crazy rich alums to make a coach rich and bring in players. Sometimes it only takes 1 or 2.

And Vanderbilt has a lot of very wealthy alumni who can make a difference if they have chosen to emphasize athletics.

Not to mention, Nashville is a fast-growing, attractive metro.

It would be like if Dat Nguyen was our coach and getting paid well for success. He's not going anywhere until asked by Vandy to do so.
